Yes, we went. No, even though we didnt discuss politics, it didnt go well. My brother in law seemed to be just itching to take offense and he did on a trivial matter. Ive never seen him so exceedingly pissed.
But I wanted to share with the group here an observation. On one side of the restaurant booth sat my sister in law with her husband. Evangelical MAGA red. Being that shes my sister in law there is no blood relationship.
On the other side of that booth with me sat my wife and my sister.
And here is the observation I made days after the fact: our side of the booth had family histories touched by the Holocaust
.. and their side didnt.
They dont care about the similarities between America in 2024 and Germany in 1938 because they have no skin in the game. And just like every belt buckle worn by Nazi troops in WWII said, they have God with them.
We have broken off contact. I am forced to concede they believe they are truly the master race.

(12,341 posts)Our damned country has become fucking stupid, and as such most people don't know enough to question anything that doesn't sound right. They just blindly accept the bullshit they're told by fox "news" and right wing podcasters.
We're doomed.

So, they think they know more than anyone else because they are not relying on experts and science.

(49,044 posts)My sister's husband's brother's family included me and I was grateful.
But brother's son was 18 and insisted on wearing MAGA hat to T-day dinner table. Wouldn't take it off.
And I silently considered that this is a Jewish family and Trump has vastly inspired antisemitism and here's this kid proudly, if not defiantly wearing a MAGA hat.
I haven't returned.

(747 posts)The holidays are always hard when you deal with family. I don't celebrate with family any longer, but when I did someone was always causing drama. I think your choice to break off contact is a good one. You don't need that added stress. Take care.

they want us to get down on our knees to them,

was true, correct and right....
Sorry, No can do. I am male and white and old,

(8,464 posts)I just cannot believe the stuff I read or see lately. I've been watching some "Democracy Now" episodes and the state of the world is ...not good. When I see the hardship that so many people are going through around the world it makes me thankful that I have such an easy life - even in Texas which is kind of disgusting in itself.
We decide not to have family over this Thanksgiving, a first for us in a while, because of the situation you described. Oddly, it seems we are the only ones in our family that celebrate Thanksgiving in what I would call a traditional sense - having family over. Maybe because that is how we grew up? and it just seems nomal for the wife to work her ass off preparing a meal for everyone so they can come and re-connect once a year or so?
Enough rant.....☮

(53,934 posts)And every time you say that Trump is racist or fascist to her, she gets all offended and throws the fact of her mom back in your face. She's all over the neighborhood Nextdoor page spreading her bile. Whenever someone points out how awful Trump is, she immediately shuts down the conversation by saying something like how dare anyone compare Trump to Hitler, that it's an insult to her mother (now passed away) who knew what a fascist was. She basically uses her dead Holocaust survivor mom to protect Trump.
