Jeff Bezos, the billionaire tech mogul and owner of The Washington Post, says he views it as a responsibility of the mainstream media to convince President-elect Trump the press is not his enemy.
Im going to try and talk him out of that idea, Bezos said at the New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday. I dont think the press is the enemy.
Youve probably grown in the last two years, he has too, he told journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin during an interview. Lets go persuade him of this. I dont think hes going to see it the same way, but maybe Ill be wrong.
Bezos said Trump today strikes him as calmer than he was during his first campaign for the White House, and more confident and settle.
The billionaires comments come just weeks after he sparked widespread outrage with a decision to kill an editorial endorsing Vice President Harris that was set to be published by the Post.
Bezos at the time defended the decision by saying presidential endorsements erode trust in media and dismissed suggestions he was capitulating to Trump to advance his business interests.

Oh, just fuck off, Jeff. BTW, why does everything in your orbit have to look like a penis? Your rocket, your Amazon logo, even your stupid head!
Tell me this isn't supposed to be a dick!

(1,105 posts)He's acting is if Trump has some misunderstanding about what the press does and that can be corrected. Trump doesn't actually believe the press "is the enemy" anymore than he believes he won the 2000 election. It's just tactical gaslighting.
Trump understands perfectly well that the press can expose his lies and criminality so he needs to discredit the press so his base doesn't believe any of that. Incredibly f'ing obvious.
So this "let's get together and make Trump realize that we're not really the enemy" is a comically stupid thing for a supposedly smart guy to think. It would be like saying "let's get together with Trump and walk through the evidence about the 2000 election so he can understand that he didn't actually win."
More likely Bezos is just playing some angle here.

(3,119 posts)Trump seems to have gained a level of popularity that spans across people of various backgrounds, colors, shapes, and sizes. For me, though, he comes across as more intimidating and threatening than before. Yet, its striking to see athletesfootball players and soccer players alikeembracing whats being called the "Trump dance." Its a fascinating, if not perplexing, shift. What are your thoughts on this?

(17,133 posts)It's incumbent upon Trump to demonstrate to the media and people of the U.S. that he is not an "enemy of the people."
Bezos has turned out to be such a huge disappointment. When someone with that much money and power is groveling and taking the side of a corrupt autocrat, it sets the worst example possible. Cowardly POS.
