How do e-mails become public?

The 2017 e-mail from Hegseth's mother is only the latest in a long series of stories based on uncovered e-mails. How do these e-mails get uncovered? Does anyone know for sure?

that someone in the family - the wife he was divorcing e.g.: who saw it gave it to the press. We don’t know how many people saw it.

2. The NY Times said a person with ties to the family gave it to them.

Someone with open access to his emails and his equipment (phone, tablet, or laptop,) entered Pete's email file rummaged around and printed off the good stuff.

Pete might have printed it off and left it on the coffee table and one of the wives or mistresses might have scooped it up and tucked it away for future reference.
