Worked 36 yrs. Took 14 mos and a lawyer to get it. My shrink is retiring and I'll need a new one to get my meds. I cannot take this worry.

(16,042 posts)If they do come for benefit programs, itll most likely be Medicaid, SNAP, and SSI because those programs are viewed as welfare. If they do anything to Social Security, itll most likely be raising the retirement age to 70 starting with people under 50 (Im guessing).

(16,042 posts)I rely on SSDI, SNAP, and Medicare. If those go away Id be screwed, probably dead within a year.

(4,640 posts)The OP is rightfully concerned as the right always claims that many of the people receiving SSDI are scamming the system (which is absolutely not true). Medicaid, SNAP and SSI are not welfare; they are public benefits, and many of the people who receive Medicaid and SNAP are employed. Raising the retirement to 70 years old would be disastrous for many people who are no longer able to work and don't receive a pension or have savings. None of these benefits should be cut - in fact, they should be expanded as they are life saving.

(34,997 posts)This is probably your shrink has told you. Don't go down the hole of dark thoughts of what might happen. Accept the ambiguity and tell yourself you will deal with it IF it happens. If it doesn't you have spent a lot of time with negative emotions that you didn't have too.
These are uncertain times. We must try to not let them put us in a downward spiral. Do little things that make you feel better.

(5,368 posts)You will get through this! Focus for the moment on things you can control, like making your bed or straightening something up - just a routine task to ease your mind.
Then, be comforted! They don't have the votes in the House to end SSDI, and they wouldn't get past the Senate filibuster either. In fact, there are probably at least four Republican senators who wouldn't even vote for such a thing in the first place. Remember - all they care about is money and power, and they overreach every time, fail at it (like Bush 2 announcing "reforms" of Social Security that went nowhere) and are thrown out of office. They arent all-powerful and they arent going to hurt you. Breathe and go about your life while we wait for them to fail. These are dark times but negative thoughts won't help. Try your very best to remain calm.
