I realize there are a lot of angles to this.
It was a mistake when Gerald Ford did it. But Nixon had already been stripped of his power and sent back to his hidey hole. Still, most historians agree it was a mistake because it sent the message that presidents are above the law.
In this case where there are so many charges and no remorse, it would be like anointing Trump as King of America. We would never recover from it.

(38,445 posts)It will demoralize the dem base even more than we already are. I will change from democrat to unaffiliated if he does this & never give another dime or minute to GOTV. Why are we always the ones being called on to extend the olive branch? It wasn't our side that stormed the Capitol to silence the voices of our fellow citizens. It's not our side asking "When can we use the guns?"
I will change to unaffiliated as well.

(4,640 posts)I went off on this a few days ago too. You're absolutely right - we've made numerous grave mistakes in the past. Going back to the end of the Civil War when we pardoned the secessionists, perpetuating the myth of the lost cause which continues to poison this country; through Ford's pardon and then Obama's "look forward, not back" bullshit. How did that turnout, Obama? None of these criminals were held accountable, and here we are. The biggest criminal and corrupt leader we've ever had has already escaped facing the law. AND trump has claimed that he has the right and power to pardon himself. The only reason Biden would do this is if he's under the erroneous belief it would "heal the nation". It would be a travesty and and offensive. Not to mention a great insult to the millions and millions of Americans who demanded justice.

(18,071 posts)seem to think it was a mistake and did not heal the nation. Ford was not a bad guy, maybe he meant well. But in the long view of history it was a big mistake. That has not changed.

(121,224 posts)and probably won't be revived after 2028. And he can't pardon the NY and GA state cases. Although Biden won't be subjected to the political jeopardy Ford placed himself in by pardoning Nixon, I think he understands that it created a shitty precedent. While accepting a pardon isn't an automatic acknowledgment of guilt (the Burdick case is often misinterpreted to that effect), it carries that implication (which is why Burdick held that a person could reject a pardon), and Trump might not want that since he's got all that immunity anyhow. And with any luck the miserable old bastard will be dead by 2028 anyhow.

(4,640 posts)have heard the comments of Fetterman, Clyburn and John Dean in support of the pardons, and are worried that those views will start gaining momentum.
