https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/10/benjamin-netanyahu-court-corruption-trialBenjamin Netanyahu has begun giving evidence in a court in Tel Aviv in his long-running corruption trial, becoming the first sitting Israeli prime minister to take the stand as a criminal defendant.
I have waited eight years for this moment, to say the truth as I remember it, which is important for justice, said Netanyahu, who was wearing a blue suit and white shirt, with a flag of Israel on one lapel and the yellow ribbon symbol of Israels hostages in Gaza on the other.
But I am also a prime minister. I am leading the country through a seven-front war. And I think the two can be done in parallel.

(49,751 posts)We seem to be living in an era of tyrants who aren't held accountable no matter what they do. Their arrogance is so flagrant that they commit their crimes out in the open and defy anyone to do something about it.

(14,389 posts)The ICC relies on member countries police forces to make arrests and transfers to the Hauge for prosecution and it's highly doubtful that nonmembers and probably the majority of members of the ICC would arrest and transfer Nuttyahoo for prosecution, so don't expect to see him in orange any time soon, if ever.

(1,674 posts)Of course I realize that, since I've been writing about this PIFWC, the ICC, INTERPOL, and the difficulties of netting Bibi for months.
An indicted war criminal is an indicted war criminal, regardless of nationality. I just posted something about two Syrian PIFWCs in GD if you have time to check it out.
BTW: Don't spill your coffee when you see this face from way back when:

(1,674 posts)I don't work for the ICC so I can't answer for them, but the process against Bashar al-Assad at the ICC started years ago.

(17,558 posts)How would you compare and contrast the war crimes committed by Netanyahu vs Assad?
Any thoughts?

(17,558 posts)He basically ignores international laws and conventions. He has used chemical weapons on Syrians, he ignores differences between combatants and civilians, leading to repeated mass killings, his use of aerial bombardment is "indiscriminate and disproportionate". Further, pro-Assad forces "continued to perpetrate massacres and conduct widespread attacks on civilians, systematically committing murder, torture, rape and enforced disappearance amounting to crimes against humanity"¹
By contrast the Netanyahu goverment, which oversaw and is responsible for the worst security failure in Israel's history, has despite that, prosecuted the war against their enemies in accordance with the laws of war. The government and the IDF have tried to minimize civilian casualties in numerous ways, making clear to Gazans and the world that their enemy is Hamas and Hezbollah.

(14,389 posts)Unfortunately, I do recognize that face, I was in Vietnam when that happened, although I didn't find out about it until I got home, that POS didn't get what he deserved IMHO, he should have gotten the DP, along with many more, for their actions that fateful day.
Sorry if I sounded a little bit condescending, that wasn't my intention by any means.
Peace out
Dan.

Let's see how this goes. This will sort of be like Al Capone going to jail for tax evasion, rather than all the murders.

(6,053 posts)a minor rap on the knuckles if that. The Powers That Be are more concerned about making sure he continues the expansion of the northern territory. AKA land grab of some other country's land which is deemed illegal by every country in the world except two. The one doing the grabbing and the one supplying a steady stream of bombs and allowing it to go on.

and it doesn't mean anything to my opinion, in a positive way, that they are in NATO.
