Luigi Mangione, 26, was charged with murder late Monday in the Dec. 4 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City after police in Altoona, Pa., were called to a McDonalds over reports of a male matching the description of the photographed suspect in the highly publicized case.
At a New York Police Department press conference on Monday afternoon, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters that Mangione was someone who had grown up in Baltimore and that his last known address was in Honolulu.
In the aftermath of Mangiones arrest, news organizations have searched for clues about Mangiones background and his potential motive, including in comments from family and friends. According to several statements posted to social media and shared with the press, a vague portrait has begun to emerge of a young man who complained of chronic back pain and may have undergone spinal surgery before he appears to have stopped communicating with people including family members months ahead of the Dec. 4 shooting. The San Francisco Standard reported Mangione's mom reported him missing to San Francisco police on Nov. 18 (this was also confirmed by the New York Times).
Based on the statements and interviews that have been made public so far, the news of Mangiones arrest seems to have come as a shock to those who knew him.

End Citizens United, run on it, and make it part of the political platform.

(4,202 posts)all of us have beefs with bureaucracy and the corporate world and injustice, but that doesnt justify picking up guns and just shooting people. I understand his frustration, but are you justifying his actions? One CEO is not to blame for the ill of an entire healthcare system, or an entire corporate system that plagues our country and world. If that CEO was not doing his job, he would be replaced by another business school A-hole. Would you support the killing of the doctors who didnt fix his problem? Do we even know what type of back problem he had? Are we really at a point that chaos should reign and random, indiscriminate vigilanteeism should be the rule?

(10,864 posts)they are not being afforded the current 77.5 yrs. Argue it as you like but it will be an argument with the academic and scientific world. Other than that, not really gonna waste time addressing you other issues.

Have sympathy, but sounds like any beef is with doctors.

Luigi -- like the Unabomber, Timothy McVeigh, every mass shooter, etc. -- found a rationale to shoot someone in the back.

(13,449 posts)and never said I did, by constantly speculating what's in his mind and medical chart. What we are being told by social media doesn't even begin to touch the surface of this very troubled man.

(3,250 posts)the pain. I've known several people who were left in constant pain after accidents. Their personalities changed. They were irritable, difficult to reason with. They lacked proper sleep, the medication gave them brain fog.
Not making excuses, but when someone who had a reputation as a smart, engaging, reasonable person changes that radically, perhaps somewhat suddenly, then something organic has happened.

(5,892 posts)One article I read said he was taking mushrooms or psychadelics for the pain maybe. I don't know about other pain killers but that is a whole other problem with hc here, people who have terrible pain are not medicated or helped properly because some people become addicted to opiates. In addition, I am just speculating of course on a small amount I have read about what is out there, I think he had a mh condition /mental break at this time brought on in part due to the pain/injury etc. which caused some sort of psychotic break or whatever it was that caused him to murder BT.

(7,569 posts)Pretty sure the surf instructor had him sign a waiver and release of liability with warnings of injury
And I reckon the surgeon did something the same about surgical outcomes as there is no guarantee
So his recourse was to do the gun thing?

Unfortunately, Luigi appears to be impotent according to his friend from back surgery. So, he's kind of an incel.
Note: I have sympathy for his medical situation. But not his choice to kill.

(1,587 posts)I have been thinking about the Manson murders this week. I wonder if the same people would be saying that the rich and famous like Sharon Tate deserved it, or that Whites had been oppressors for so long that the race war Manson tried to instigate through the murders was worth it.
We mock Trump for saying "I could kill someone in Times Square and get away with it," but then when our side glorifies someone who literally commits gun violence, it's fine.
Cult-like behavior if you ask me.
