FRESNO, Calif. -- Police now say a woman was killed by her 2-year-old child during an accidental shooting in northeast Fresno last week.

The Fresno Police Department has identified the victim as 22-year-old Jessinya Mina.

Police say Mina's toddler was able to reach an unsecured gun inside the apartment.

"The firearm was stored in a location where the toddler accessed the firearm, and at some point, in time, while handling that particular weapon, the toddler was able to manipulate the trigger, and it actually struck Mina as she was lying in bed," said Lt. Paul Cervantes with the Fresno Police Department.

When officers arrived at the apartment complex, Mina's 18-year-old boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez, was starting to take her to the hospital.

First responders then stepped in and took Mina to the hospital, where she later died.

In a statement to Action News, Mina's sister says Sanchez neglected Mina's requests not to keep a gun in the house.

Police say Sanchez was arrested and booked into the Fresno County jail that night for negligent storage of a firearm and felony child endangerment but has since bailed out, adding he has no criminal history.

However, I find it difficult to believe that the toddler shot his mama. And then the article doesn’t mention the type of gun that was used to kill Mina. But I think most guns are rather heavy, especially for a toddler, unless the toddler had help pulling the trigger.

I think the authorities should have kept boyfriend locked up. He’s the responsible (errr, irresponsible) person here!

Has a very light trigger pull, and they can be set lower if the owner desires.

It should be no lighter than 4 pounds, but there are idiots who set it lighter.

But that weight is deceiving. It is easy for even a 2 year old to pull a trigger when you add the weight of the gun against your finger.

Most semi-auto pistols do not. The only safety they have is on the trigger itself and is only meant to keep the gun from firing if dropped or hit.

A simple lever safety would avoid many, many, accidental shootings.

A typical pistol only weighs a few pounds and triggers are not hard to pull. A mattress isn't going to stop a bullet so she could have been hit even if the gun was fired from under the bed.
