Most Americans are not taught to stand up for ourselves. We take whatever crumbs the government and corporations choose to drop for us and never stand up and demand what we actually want and need - living wages, healthcare for all, affordable education. We are taught that there is nothing we can do about any of that, because the system is obviously corrupt and just drains us for the value of our labor and throws us away once they have wrung the life out of us.
But this guy comes from a background that had given him every advantage and was doing well in life. He hurt his back in a surfing accident (in Hawaii?) and suddenly found out that UnitedHealthCare was just going to let him suffer in pain for the rest of his life (or at least for the next few decades). This was not what he was used to. This injustice was for other people, not someone like him. He'd been playing the game of life on the easy setting - yes, taking advantage of the opportunities he was given, but what opportunities! - and now suddenly he was facing an injustice that all of his privilege couldn't solve.
For a person like that, who is self-actuated and taught that life should be fair, it makes sense that he took action. He didn't know, like the rest of us, that life in the US is unfair and cruel and the rest of us just put up with it. And so, he didn't.

(3,413 posts)That said, The Insurance Adjuster is a boss superhero/villain/hitman name. Kudos.

(26,772 posts)...why did he have the lowest-rated health insurance company, UHC? He could've afforded much better insurance.

(11,385 posts)like so many states.
Hence, the monopoly money in the backpack.
Also buying a separate insurance policy from your employer's policy is probably super expensive, especially when you have a prior chronic pain condition.

(6,416 posts)I hope the rest of those CEOs realize that worshipping money and profits cant necessarily buy them a well to do, long life.

(2,153 posts)I can list hundreds of more "mean spirited" things.
It's time to stop 🛑 this "ooh, that's too mean spirited", and deal with the reality - proper behavior has gotten us nowhere.
If you don't mind being eaten alive by oligarchs, proceed along your present path.
I am not going to live my life by someone else's sense of propriety. Not with the bullshit these fascists are trying to pull.

We need to sit around in a circle, hold hands and sing KUMBAYA. Surely that'll get them to change.

he threw a tantrum and killed a man.*
He had money, education, free time, and opportunities. He had resources and a safety net that 99% of Americans cant even dream of. He could have tried to change the system.
But that would have required work and delayed gratification.
So he struck out like a toddler.
What a waste.
*Yes, the CEO was a scumbag who made money by denying people healthcare. Still not an excuse for murder.

(1,521 posts)You clearly haven't read his manifesto, which mentions no personal motivation for his actions. There is no indication he did this to stand up for himself.
He did this to make a name for himself. He did this because he sees himself as uniquely capable of moral clarity (emp added):
No, you do not need to grow up rich to think you can stand up for yourself. Most people can and do stand up for themselves. The biggest lie in politics is that "both parties are the same and nothing ever changes". If that's something you're teaching then look in the fucking mirror.
Mangione is not a hero and your pathetic revisionism is a disgrace.
ProfessorPlum
(11,385 posts)I didn't say he was a hero - I said he was self-actuated.
He also noticed that "the American public has allwed them to get away with it" . . . like I said
ProfessorPlum
(11,385 posts)i'm not surprised that this guy comes from a class that is definitely taught to stand up for itself.

Even the ACA, the biggest healthcare change in my lifetime, was basically a gift and giveaway to big insurance, with a few (well received) protections and expansion of Medicaid.
