This is an unbelievable abdication by Wray and makes it so much easier for Trump to install a corrupt leadership under Kash Patel and weaponize the FBI. Wray is doing a huge disservice to the FBI past, present, and future.

(8,535 posts)But Trump fucking selected Wray -- while he may not have been as MAGA as some, he certainly was never someone that a Democrat should have willingly selected for the position. Biden should have gotten rid of him when he took office as part of cleaning up Trump holdovers, but he acquiesced to """tradition""" and let him stay on.
If anticipatory obedience to fascism wasn't enough for you to dislike this move by Wray, I fully believe that he is resigning in advance so that Trump doesn't have to fire him, meaning when/if a Democratic president tries to fire Patel or whichever MAGA holdover inevitably remains on after their inauguration, they will claim that it violates precedent and that Patel should be allowed to keep his position and I'm sure it will be happily taken up by the Republican-hijacked courts.

(52,668 posts)isn't how this is supposed to work. Some GOP members might have voted against Patel for that reason alone.

(3,530 posts)With the possible exception of "no other reason" for firing.
Trump's main justification for firing seems to be that Wray is to blame for the raid on Mar-a-Lago.
Having a warrant to do so still left some discretion in the FBI whether or not to execute on it.
Of course it was the National Archives which initiated the whole recovery effort, and Wray had a duty to them to proceed.
