Governors call on Congress again to protect authority over space National Guard units

The National Governors Association again called on Congress to preserve the authority of governors over Air National Guard space units.

The Senate Armed Services Committee and the House Armed Services Committee on Saturday released their joint version of the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2025 fiscal year, and it did not include an amendment the House committee approved in May to protect a governor’s authority over space units in their state.

“The Armed Services Committee’s failure to preserve Governors’ lawful authority over their National Guards in the NDAA is deeply concerning and breaks with more than a century of important precedent surrounding state’s rights — as well as a violation of federal law,” a statement from the NGA, which Colorado Gov. Jared Polis chairs, said.

An Air Force proposal sought to transfer Air National Guard space units to Space Force, but remove the authority state governors historically have had over those units. Governors and members of Congress from both parties have opposed the proposal, saying it would undermine the National Guard system and disrupt guard members’ intentions to serve both their country and their states.

If the National Guard is made up of the various State Militias, how is it even physically possible for them to have any kind of activity in or responsibility for the "space" above their respective state boundaries???

Something weird is going on with this.

They serve as the the surge capability to active duty forces in time of war. Now they are proposing transferring them to the Space Force.

The Space Force is new and now they are talking about transferring Air National Guard units that do space related missions to the Space Force. The sticking point is that the legislation removes the governors’ control.

Think. Again.

I did not know we had a "space" National Guard and as your wiki article points out, we don't.

And have done so for decades. They are in the process of creating a Space NG but that will merely be a title and uniform change, so for all practical purposes we already have a Space NG. But yes, at the moment there is no formal Space NG.

Or are you trolling? The “space” Guard you keep going on about are the Air National Guard units that have been in existence for decades and are performing the space mission. The military is in the process of transforming them into the Space Force NG from the Air Force National Guard, but they are the SAME units. No conspiracy.
