Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman said Wednesday he’s open to Donald Trump’s idea that the U.S. acquire Greenland, telling reporters that it’s “strategically a smart thing.”
“I mean, it’s pretty reasonable, and I think it’s actually strategically a smart thing,” Fetterman said, according to NBC News. CNN’s Manu Raju added that Fetterman told the press that he would support the acquisition if Denmark did as well.
Fetterman and Trump had a meeting a few days ago at Trump’s Florida club, Mar-a-Lago, where they not only discussed Greenland but other expansionist ideas—such as reacquiring the Panama Canal.

Trump had kind things to say about Fetterman afterward. “It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed,” he told the Washington Examiner. “He’s a commonsense person. He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful.”

(708 posts)Some have posited that a Hoodie wearing man from PA might be a spy working of behalf of the Dems to get inside information.
I wish it was true, each day it feels unlikely.
Rather, I think the Hoodie hides the truth and this torn gym shorts is a traitor.
As I recall the MAGA crowd made fun of he was hospitalized for mental health care….On your own , dude.

(19,052 posts)I don’t expect red state Dems to operate the same as blue state Dems but he has dramatically overcorrected. If it continues the net effect is that he will alienate a significant number of Democrats trying to move soft Rs and R leaning Independents his way. And in that scenario it’s unlikely he wins reelection.

Though fat chance he’ll cut a deal that is good for anyone but himself.

(20,250 posts)is this: "EVERYTHING TRUMP TOUCHES TURNS TO SHIT".
Maybe the good Senator from Pennsylvania is not aware of this well known truth, but setting that shortcoming aside fuck the MAGAts, where does Fetterman think the money's coming from?

(18,386 posts)And his wife.
Fetterman has preemptively defused Trumps usual rhetoric about liberals, and has gained his respect. Fetterman now has the ability to leverage this relationship, which could obviously help him and possibly the democrats.
I'm just trying to understand Fettermans recent statements, without assuming that he's a traitor in the democratic party. He deserves at least that.
muriel_volestrangler
(103,477 posts)for the slightest of reasons. If Trump actually needed Fetterman for something, it might be an indicator; but Fetterman is the needy one here. Trump already has a majority of acolytes in the Senate.

(103,477 posts)The early list of potential spending offsets obtained by POLITICO includes changes to Medicare and ending Biden administration climate programs, along with slashing welfare and “reimagining” the Affordable Care Act. Five people familiar with the document said those provisions are options to finance Republicans’ massive party-line reconciliation bill or other spending reform efforts, including those being spearheaded by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.
The people, granted anonymity to discuss closed-door negotiations, said that the list originated from the House Budget Committee, chaired by Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Texas). Republicans involved in the reconciliation plans have been generally targeting the listed programs for several months, but internal GOP fights over trillions of dollars in potential cuts are just beginning.
None of that should matter. This list is a statement of what they want to do, a statement of what they believe the proper role of government to be, and a statement that they don’t find the Musk–Ramaswamy project as worthy of ridicule as it actually is. There is no compromising with people like this. Also, I think we should keep an eye on this Arrington cat. He seems to be the ambitious Jim Jordan type.

Can't argue with Charlie Pierce - he's one of the most perceptive commentators in the world (along with Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman, and Josh Marshall). Fetterman is collaborating with evil.

(10,309 posts)on many people in high places that this is not your run of the mill mediocre President-elect. They still think he's gonna straighten up and fly right. Which he never did the first term and he certainly isn't going to the second time. People who aren't in the business or who have never been close to someone with a personality disorder often don't understand their immutability.
Blue_Tires
(57,596 posts)But I think there's something more cynical and craven at work here with Fetterman... He's trying to engineer an eventual situation where he claims the Dems "have left him behind" or some bullshit and then he makes himself an Independent thinking the triangulation will save his ass...

(255 posts)and I do not believe Fetterman will be re-elected to the senate. I believe he will either lose his primary or lose to whoever the Republican candidate is. His mental health is a major concern here. I think he is angling for a paid job under Dump when this occurs. He certainly would not get anything paying what he makes right now in the private sector.
