If a 9/11 event happened today, no significant country would back the US. If the US was forced to go to war, it would do so basically alone.
Plaque outside the US Consulate General in Toronto thanking Canada for our support following 9/11. guess "eternally grateful" had an expiry after all. Maybe DOGE can melt it down for Scrap.

(1,411 posts)every nation in the world, sans a handful, would immediately and vigorously rally to the United States.
There would be outpouring of support from traditional adversaries and there would be periods of mourning from our NATO allies.
If 9/11 were to happen today, it would be result of incompetence and dereliction of duty from our government's intelligence community. It would be due to people being placed in positions of genuine power (not just authority) due to their political gravitas and/or fealty. This failure would eventually be obfuscated and those most responsible for the failure would be promoted upwards -- in this case a Waltz to a Rubio, etc.
My larger point is overwhelming tragedy does not diminish the humanity of other nations in their view of the us. The US. They seem to have empathy.
Our government, empathy or no, is more a function of imbecility.
Edit: Also, in re: going to war, as in 9/11, we would probably cobble a begrudging coalition of our steadfast allies and economic partners. We would probably not get the French or Germans, but we'd hit back hard with "Freedom Fries" and "Liberty Sausage" to go with the Gulf of America nonsense.
See? The playbook stays remarkable consistent

(35,489 posts)The USA is considered out of NATO, a Russia ally. They won't pick up the phone. Read the thread I posted.
You do not realize the anger and disgust here.
My real point is when there is a catastrophe like 9/11, or a tsunami, or a asteroid or whatever, I don't think the general populace is going to be angry and vindictive.
The public posture, and indeed I believe their authentic feeling, will be one of solidarity, support, and compassion. Behind the scenes, the population might 'tut tut,' I guess that's what you get when you elect the Anti-Christ. And in terms of the actions of governments, they will be overjoyed to see Trump forced to genuflect and ask on bended knee for their support. They will milk it for all it is worth, but they will publicly of course condemn the suffering caused to the citizenry of their brothers and sisters in the United States.

(1,411 posts)but I'm not willing to cede the point. Do you really think a 9/11 style even happens, the world is going to go "Pft, thats the US, glad it happened" of "Pft, thats the US, they got what they deserved?"
Trump: I say Canada should be our 51st state. No tariffs, no nothing. We give them military protection. They're about last in NATO. They say, 'why should they spend on military, the U.S. protects us.' That's true. It's not fair. They couldn't exist if they had to pay their way.

(1,411 posts)I understand and share your anger.
I disagree that the 'world' wouldn't suddenly experience a sudden solidarity with their fellow human that happen to Americans.

Could have launched air strikes on Taliban forces in Afghanistan and called it a day.

(1,411 posts)Plus a Rumsfeld, give or take a Bolton. A few USAID officials very interested in petroleum chemistry.
Perhaps there was a Bush involved. The illustrious Secretary of State, Dr. Condi Rice.
And of course General Colin Powell, Secretary of State and lesser war-criminal. A man who brought a tube of talcum powder to the UN security council and told them it was anthrax.
Truly, the finest minds of their generation. And the generation before.
There were also the Grahams, the McConnells, the Grassleys.
Ahhhh Rome after the wine got all leaded.

A very smart man. Did things people say, people say they've never be done. Couldn't be done, they say it couldn't and it it was - a lot of very smart things, so people say he's a very savvy and smart man. And we like savvy. We like savvy. So, we have a plan and its very good. A lot of people are going to be very happy.
