Republicans on Capitol Hill are shying away from criticizing Donald Trump’s policies over fears for their physical safety and that of their families, a Democratic member of Congress has said.
Eric Swalwell, a Democratic representative from California, said his Republican colleagues were “terrified” of crossing Trump not only because of the negative impact on their political careers, but also from anxiety that it might provoke physical threats that could cause personal upheaval and require them to hire round-the-clock security as protection.
Swalwell’s comments came in a webinar chaired by the journalist Sidney Blumenthalin response to a question on whether Republicans might be driven to rebel against or even impeach Trump.
“I have a lot of friends who are Republicans,” he said. “They are terrified of being the tallest poppy in the field, and it’s not as simple as being afraid of being primaried and losing their job. They know that that can happen.

8. If too afraid to serve should they resign?

What are the options.

Many citizens who stand up to Trump and MAGA get death threats. Many administrators who stood up to Trump in his first administration have and had gotten death threats. Judges and their family members have received threats.

Are some of these scared Republicans not resigning because they hope to secretly prevent some Trump horrors from happening?

I suspect it is time for some of these frightened to just resign, let the Democrats take over the House, and let us move on to the next stage in the War against Democracy and America.

9. And yet Swalwell and his family were seriously threatened and he still keeps fighting

As an example, Swalwell said his congressional staff was "harassed and terrorized" this week after a group he identified as Libs of TikTok accused him of supporting someone the group described as a pedophile in New Hampshire.

"They stormed my office," Swalwell said. "I was voting, but they harassed and terrorized my staff."

Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger told Congress that threats against members are up 300% over the last seven years.

Swalwell says the harsh atmosphere won't change his approach to politics.
