Veterans slam J.D. Vance for disregarding a mess hall rule 'Marines learn on day 1'

By Jennifer Bowers Bahney
Published March 28, 2025 12:49 PM ET

Some fellow veterans criticized Vice President JD Vance's visit to the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA, this week, particularly when Vance made his way to the mess hall to have lunch.

The Vice President sported a green military jacket and a bright red hat with the words, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine" emblazoned on it.

On X, formerly Twitter, journalist and former Marine @RonFilipkowski wrote, "Marines learn on Day 1 to never wear their cover inside and damn sure never to eat with it on. Maybe Corporal Correspondent went to a different boot camp than I did."

https://www.rawstory.com/jd-vance-marine/

This "guy' has been a disgrace ever since he said yes to a 34 count convicted fraudster............what a fucking idiot..........even when I was growing up in the Air Force and when we at at the base cafeteria after a ball game we always removed our caps........... .....

Imagined or other wise, to use the Insurection Act, and ignore the Posse Comatatus Act, so he can "Militarize" the Military to establish Martial Law across the nation........

The question is, just how deep have the Trumphumpers infiltrated the U.S. ranks of Soldiers and Sailors?????????

Some are saying that he will do it on April 20th, which has many different significances to do it on that date.
It also is immediately after everyone will have paid their taxes on April 15th....conveniently.......

... a good friend of mine and I were walking Main Side at Great Lakes on our way to chow at Snipe's Castle, when Bannon (not that one) said, "Watch this!"

There was an Ensign riding a bicycle toward us on the road, one-handed with a briefcase in the other hand.

Bannon stepped off the curb and gave one smart salute and held it, the Ensign returned it and crashed the bike.

Good times. We loved Admiral Zumwalt.

Later that summer they stopped processing minor pot possession because if they pushed chargers on them all, it would have ended up delaying sending swabbies to WestPac for the war by months.

... however, I also learned there was a "secret menu" - there were rules for breaking rules. That's why I could see airdales with 'sleeves' on at chow. At the same time, when they launch aircraft, they saluted the pilots when it was time to be sling shot off the deck. That indicates to me that sleeves are a cover, because we did not salute while uncovered, though officers would return a quick salute while they were uncovered and even while sitting.

We were fairly rebellious as enlisted personnel in the early 70s. We would do things to put up a salute: take our cap off and brush our hair back as we approached a saluting distance. Or cut an oblique to get out of range. At least once in "A" school, Bannon and I were cutting across a grinder as two juniors were coming towards us, we cut to port to stay out of range and they cut to starboard to intercept us. We were never successfully intercepted.

That HQ squadron desk jockey was in a concrete bunker writing he fluff pieces at Al-Asad in 2005, while a mile away at the same base I was sweating my ass off doing aviation ordnance work outside in the open during the middle of the night risking rocket attacks. This was the second time I was activated during the reserve portion of my 8-year contract.

After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003, Vance enlisted in the United States Marine Corps,[12] serving as a military journalist with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.[13] During his four years of service, he was deployed to the Iraq War in 2005 for six months in a non-combat role, writing articles and taking photographs.[12] He attained the rank of corporal, and his decorations included the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.[14]

Everything about Vance is a fraud. His fake history in his book (he grew up wealthy in a large home in a high end Columbus suburb), his claims about his mom (she wasn’t a fentanyl addict and was a nurse earning six figures who got fired for stealing prescription drugs from her employer), and even his name (which he has changed multiple times as he reinvents himself with lie after lie after lie).

Service in our Armed Forces teaches those who can learn a great deal about personal behavior, from making your bed to how to place your knife on your tray in the mess hall. Most people can absorb those lessons easily, and others can't fathom the purpose of those life-lessons. All of us who took those lessons to heart pity the poor fools (Thank you, Mr. T) who can go through life humping their couches and wearing a hat at dinner time. We are in a sad time now.

There are certain things that got drilled into my head that are auto response to this day. One of those is removing a lid when entering a building, I don’t even have to think about it, my hand just automatically goes up and takes it off. Doesn’t surprise me that Vance doesn’t have that kind of respect for his training. Makes me wonder what else he forgets.

It was a PITA. Covers off indoors. Put 'em back on outdoors. A guy spent a lot of time donning and doffing his hat.

Even more of a pity was that we had three different hats. The dress hat, which you only wore with your dress blues. The garrison or flight cap, which also had another name I can't use here. And the baseball style cap, worn only with the olive drab green utility fatigues. Haven't worn a hat since, really. Too much trouble, they seem to me.

My son just graduated from Army Basic Training and I talked to him about his "cover" and he said they drill that into you the minute you put the uniform on for the first time. The cover comes off the minute you get ready to cross the threshold of the doorway. It is drilled into you so you never forget it.

Vance is a disrespectful prick who now thinks he is above the law as well as any custom he doesn't care about. What a petty little jerk.
