"Musk and Trump destroyed the shield that protected America from the next global contagion... It is in America's interest

“Musk and Trump destroyed the shield that protected America from the next global contagion… It is in America’s interest to reverse course immediately and rebuild the crucial infrastructure needed to detect and respond to outbreaks. Not only is this the right thing to do but it makes economic sense.”

In fact the opposite. He is doing everything he can to encourage the loss of population.

the authors of a book called "In Covid's Wake: How Our Politics Failed Us".
Authors are Stephen Macedo and Frances Lee. Princeton Univ. Press.

The gist of the discussion was that according to a study released in Nov.2019, just before the pandemic hit, measures that would normally be used in a pandemic were not actually very effective. Also, that governments using said measures should inform the public of the fact of their ineffectiveness. Long story short, no mention of the fact that other countries had better compliance for societal and cultural reasons than we did. No mention of the terribly high number of infections and deaths, etc. And of course no mention of the fact that informing the public of the relative effectiveness or lack thereof of these measures, would quite possibly have resulted in less compliance with what were at that time the only tools at hand in a desperate situation.

Mostly the discussion revolved around the authors' stipulation that no dissent was allowed when measures, ultimately including lockdown,, were enacted.

No mention that there was indeed dissent on several fronts, including mask refusal, large gatherings and ultimately vaccine refusal, all of which contributed to the rise of the Covid multi-variants too numerous to mention and the need for annual vaccines.
There was no pushback from the PBS host. And gawd help us when/if this happens again. Between what happened last time, the Trump regime in charge and RFK Jr. as HHS Sec. the stage is set for potential disaster.
