Write Hear – Pop Culture & the Beatles
So, I get that the world is kinda like a dumpster fire in a garbage pile and so on. But when you have a moment, can you send out some love to this guy? He gave us all a ton of great music and joy and he's not doing so well right now. And we need a little more Phil Collins right now, don't ya think?

"to send fan mail to Phil Collins, you can address it to Phil Collins Ltd., 25 Ives Street, London, SW3 2ND, UK."

(65,638 posts)Young people generally are awed by music that isn't egocentric in nature as if the thought never occurred to them.
Not dissing the younger generations. I believe it's a societal issue.

(10,299 posts)My parents thought "What? This older guy?". I loved Genesis and his solo career. Saw him in concert 8 times.
Granted, I had eyes on a few others as well, like Bono, Adam Ant, etc. But I went to his concerts the most.
His performances and drumming were outstanding.
I hope he can weather through this.

(23,836 posts)My daughter who is 33 and suffers from severe mental health problems is a drummer as well and our song is one he wrote and performed for the Disney movie "Tarzan", called "You'll Be In My Heart" and he actually wrote that song with his own daughter in mind and the music video for that song reflects that.
"The Beatles" were the group that impacted my life from the age of 11 and now there are only 2 of them left alive--Paul and Ringo, and I wonder who will be the last Beatle alive and if I will live to see when they are both gone. The curse of old age is outliving your favorite musicians and band members, favorite TV and movie stars, good friends and relatives you've known all your life, awaiting your own demise and hoping it will come in your sleep when you still have your wits about you and can get around ok.

(2,804 posts)...some of them from being a physical performer (being a drummer is pretty much an athletic activity), and some from advancing age. Collins also had at least one back surgery which was botched, as I recall; he also has some neuropathy from type II diabetes. I really feel for the guy...for some of us musically-inclined kids in the '80s, he was one of our heroes. I remember being blown away by some of the experimental, pioneering production techniques that Collins and Peter Gabriel employed on all those amazing records (and let's also not forget the contributions made by producer/engineer Hugh Padgham).
And yes, it's a terminally-overplayed song now, but I still remember how listening to "In the Air Tonight" for the first time was absolutely terrifying--in a good way, like a horror movie. You just knew something bad was coming, and yet when those drums kicked in, it was still shocking--it sounded like the end of the world. Listen to that one again with fresh ears sometime, and take note of all the little things going on in the mix, long before the Drums of Doom blow the walls down. That kind of musical drama is what inspired me to study music seriously as a young person, even when a lot of my peers didn't consider such pursuits "hip".

(13,221 posts)It was in heavy rotation soon after my best friend committed suicide and the song spoke to me with disturbing precision. It is also, stylistically, the quintessential '80s song.
