I worked 60 hours straight once when I was in my 30's, in order to meet a deadline. The majority of this time was spent sitting down, not standing on my feet like Senator Booker is.
During this same general time period, I worked 20 to 30 hours straight several times for the same reason.
These efforts messed me up to some degree permanently.
I am watching Senator Booker on YouTube right now.
I have a feeling he is going to keep pushing, unless he has a pre-determined plan to stop after X number of hours.
I know how he is feeling right now. He is charged up, and he is running on adrenaline. He's not feeling how this is harming his mind and body.
If he goes for another 7 or 8 hours, he's going to start slurring his words, and his muscles are going to start aching, much more than they probably are now.
I might be wrong, but I think he is going to try to push through it. He's making a point. He's sacrificing himself.
I think it's a goddamn shame that someone has to go through this to at least try to slow down a madman.
We owe Senator Booker a debt of gratitude.
We have been asking for someone on our side to fight, and he is leading the way.
This is what non-violent fighting looks like.
And it's all to slow down a malignant narcissist.
It's a shame it has to be done in the first place.
Again, I could certainly be wrong, but I think he's going to go until he has to be carried out.
I think that since he's gone this far, he's going to keep going and earn his rightful place in history books.

(242 posts)He yielded one time to let Goldwater insert something into the record.
The record for multiple speakers is 60 days.
mcar
(44,417 posts)Tell me what Senator stood without a break for 60 days because that person must be a god or cyborg.
Booker hasn't been able to pee for 21 hours. There is no way that happened with one person for 60 days.
writerJT
(242 posts)Because it is multiple, that means it is not one.
mcar
(44,417 posts)That's not "multiple speakers," i.e. many people keeping the filibuster going.
Again, name one Senator who held the floor for 60 days without a break. It never happened.
I never said that a single speaker held the floor alone for 60 days. You are arguing against something that you made up.
Edit: removing something that may have been interpreted as too harsh. I’ll leave it at my above comment because I think this exchange speaks for itself.
mcar
(44,417 posts)Sen. Booker held the floor. Others were allowed to ask questions, but they didn't take the floor. You are saying that Thurmond holds the record for single speaker, but multiple speaker is 60 days.
My understanding is that Sen. Booker had to remain standing, at the dais, without stop. Others could ask him questions.
So I ask again - how is this not breaking the record?
writerJT
(242 posts)All I did was list historical facts. There are in fact two records for longest speeches, one was a single speaker and the other was multiple speakers. Pretty damn simple.
All you’ve done is make up things that I didn’t say for you to argue against. Very strange.
The record for multiple speakers is 60 days.
Pretty clear.

Hopefully, we get some inspiring election result news soon too.

(1,837 posts)Is that many people will argue that this accomplished nothing. I heartily disagree. The symbolism is critically important, especially leading up to Saturday. It is energizing and inspiring.
It's also important for the record. Every word he speaks becomes part of recorded history.
Let's hope this moment isn't wasted.

(115 posts)What will happen next is he'll announce he's running for President. And then he will hold a rally every month for the next three and a half years and shame Trump every chance he gets and remind the country that none of this is normal and most of it is illegal. Booker 2028!!!

I think he is young enough to quickly recover from the effort,
I don't see anything but a temporary 'sacrifice'---
but what he has done here, is something that this party has been waiting for!!!
Something 'unprecedented'! GOD BLESS CORY BOOKER!
I don't think it would be going too far to say, that with this action,
he has greatly elevated his 2028 presidential prospects,
should he choose to run!
(He has certainly elevated them with ME!)

(2,764 posts)But as someone who is a long time veteran of ultra-efforts (24 hour bike races, 48 hour bike races, 3 days without sleep on the job, etc., very long hauls in grad school)
He's not harming himself permanently, and no medical professionals need intervene.
This kind of thing FEEDS a person. He will be exhausted when he is done, and then he will rest, rest well, and he will come back stronger. That's how it works.
And I LOVE that he's beaten that shit stain on our country, Strom Thrumond!

(85,815 posts)Yeah, sometimes a little factoid is also a little gross. But there WILL be people wondering, understandably, how he executed a marathon like this. From what I read, he didn’t leave to go to the bathroom, but I’m sure I haven’t read everything about it yet.
There’s a LOT. And there’ll be a lot more. Especially if what he did really catches fire with other Dems.
Frankly, I don’t care how he managed it. All I care about is that he DID it. How he did so really doesn’t much matter.

(3,428 posts)The longest shift I ever worked was 22 hours with one meal break in the middle. It took me three days to recover. And I was in my late 30's and healthy. Corey's 55 and pulled this off quite nicely. We need more of this. Thank you, Senator Booker.
