(4,759 posts)In November 2024, Waltz won by 33%
Gaetz District was a 14.8% margin. Gaetz won in November 2024 by 32%.
Those are gains of 19% & 17.2% (Huge!). If Democrats can do even half that well in the midterms (cut say 9% off Republicans margins everywhere), Democrats will retake the House easily.

(4,759 posts)Those are HUGE gains. If Democrats can come anywhere close to similar performances across the country in the midterms, Dems will take the House in a landslide.

An economic boycott all over Florida will be its downfall on top of climate change disasters being ignored by their government and FEMA. Sorry Disney you are screwed there now!

(9,977 posts)I don't believe we will never have another Democratic win, but you're right that we're on the way to a lot of economic pain thanks to trump and republicans.

(338 posts)The 1st was Democrat Earl Hutto's seat until January 1995.
The 6th was Democrat Buddy MacKay's seat until January 1989; then he moved on to Lt Gov under Lawton Chiles, and then Governor.
Good times.....

(9,977 posts)More than I've ever seen, even in presidential races. All the publicity brought out lots of voters for both sides that might not have voted otherwise. Unfortunately, it brought out more red than blue voters.

(45,133 posts)It was entirely expected that there would be a significant drop in turn out for these special elections compared to the 2024 election, but the drop off was much greater for repubs -- enough to reduce the margin of victory from around 30% to around 14%, but nowhere near enough to flip either seat.
More specifically, in the First District, the Repub candidate, Patronis, got 69% fewer votes than Matt Gaetz got in 2024, while the Democratic candidate, Gay Valimont, got only 49 percent fewer votes than she got in 2024.
Similarly, in the Sixth District, the Repub candidate, Randy Fine, got 61% fewer votes than Michael Waltz got in 2024, while the Democratic candidate, Josh Weil, got only 41 percent fewer votes than the Democratic candidate got in 2024.
The result was that instead of losing by 33% (first district) or 28% (sixth district), the two Democrats closed the margin to 14% - still a comfortable win for the repubs, but a big drop off for solidly red districts that could bode well for swing districts in 2026 if the pattern continues..
