General Discussion

I am reposting as an OP what I wrote in a separate thread because I would like a broader discussion on what you guys think the future holds.
Even if we get rid of him in 2028 , it will take a very long time to rebuild. We will have lost relationships with former allies, the trade markets shifted, countries will have found alternative markets.
Our farmers for example, won't be able to win back markets if somebody else filled the void.
On the federal front, smart people will prefer to be employed in the private sector rather than take a federal job.
Its especially true in tech sectors like IT where a database expert for example, can make twice as much in the private sector.
The attraction that the federal jobs had which was job security and good benefits is gone.
On the scientific front, many scientists will have gone abroad to conduct their research and won't come back.
Global alliances like NATO and the like will have learned to do without us, Europe is rearming.
South America and Africa will see a large influx of investments from China after USAID was shattered and all our soft power squandered.
They ( China) will get a hold of important natural resources markets by exercising that soft power and investing there.
I could go on but I think America's hegemony is gone for a generation.

It is America’s fate to become just like its parent Britain, left with only memories of past glory while fading into insignificance.

(2,217 posts)Even with a Democratic president and Congress following this mess, we are proving to be an unreliable partner in many ways. Understandably, no other country will want to invest too much time, money or faith in us being on their side when the going gets tough.

It is becoming the only way to regain trust and support the fight against authoritarian rule elsewhere
Authoritarianism and criminality and captive populations are not going to save the planet. With democracy and rule of law we stand a chance.

(4,607 posts)As the French said, they cannot depend on what the voters in Wisconsin decide to do every 4 years and then base their well-being on that. We are fucked royally, and I don't know that we'll ever be able to recover 100%. I fear that this is just the beginning of a long & ugly decline.
