(2,268 posts)No you idiot, this is what he believes. And now that countries know the US is not a trusted partner, they will look at alternatives.
The damage is done, permanently.

(1,175 posts)There is no guarantee that the countries he outrageously tariffed will respond in like manner when Trump lowers the tariffs. By then, angry countries will have made all kinds of deals with each other to ban together to protect themselves from US aggressive economic moves. We don't make a damn thing except guns and other weapons and some planes that are fucked up. Our farmers, except for black family farmers, are subsidized to nth degree and most of what we grow and export is bad for your health...soy.
And now our cyber security is at risk because the best people have been fired on the advice of vampire-witchy-looking nitwit. I guess this is part of the plan to allow Putin to interfere in our coming elections?
All in all, we are screwed. I believe our last hope was gone when so many refused to vote for Kamala. Maybe one of those tornados will pick up Mar a lago while that 1M dollar dinner is going on?

(1,767 posts)No Country is going to negotiate with a man known to lie and break every contract he's ever signed. He just did it with Canada and Mexico! Why in the world would the leader of any country negotiate with Trump? As soon as the leader of that country said something that p*ssed Trump off, Trump would break the deal out of pique.
Countries will all form alliances and leave the US out of the loop.

The whole world has one clear target for anger. Trump. The least likable, mean, angry, ugly human on the planet. Do they need to kiss his ass or simply make him the bad guy or role he wants to play. Seems like the person that needs to kiss assessors is him.

(6,912 posts)We are fortunate that Canada has close ties with the U.K. and Europe. Mexico is strengthening its ties with Europe and has strengthened its democracy while we were sinking in the MAGA mire.
So our two continental land border countries may be in a position to help us from sinking further down. I am grateful to those who post here on the news in these two countries. Thank you.

(2,003 posts)Trump's tariff taxes are to enforce his pay to play. He's forcing companies to crawl to him and grovel. Then he will remove the tariff from them, and the people not following what is going on will think that he improved the economy.

(17,118 posts)or target of such negotiations, what is the measure of success/failure or compliance/noncompliance, what is the relevant industry or product, for each unique country (after all, the rates are all different!).
IF this is a negotiation tactic then these answers would be readily available. There should be an immediate, no babble, no dissembling, bing-bang-boom clean answer. What is the negotiation goal with those fucking penguin-inhabited islands? What is the negotiation goal with an island only occupied by a US military base? ASK THESE QUESTIONS, YOU HACKS!

“What is the downside for humoring him for this little bit of time? No one seriously thinks the results will change,” the official said. “He went golfing this weekend. It’s not like he’s plotting how to prevent Joe Biden from taking power on Jan. 20. He’s tweeting about filing some lawsuits, those lawsuits will fail, then he’ll tweet some more about how the election was stolen, and then he’ll leave.”

If you say it is just a negotiating tool and you won't keep it in place long, then it ceases to serve its purpose as a negotiating tool. And it's also not good that the next Republican Trump supporting moron is saying "Oh, we're definitely keeping them in place long term - manufacturing will start moving back to the USA in three-four YEARS." YEARS, now! The problem, of course, is that even the Trumpies themselves don't know which it is (temporary negotiating tool or long-term economic plan) because they are incompetent idiots and have zero expertise beyond convincing other idiots of stupid things on the Internet.

(54,955 posts)Other countries are quickly enacting retaliatory tariffs. Donnie can't make those go away. Even if Donnie reversed everything, other countries would be on firm ground to keep some of them in place as punishment, to deter us from pulling a stunt like this again.
Worse, they are moving swiftly to create a trading environment that doesn't rely on America. Donnie permanently demoted us from the world's most preferred trading partner all the way down to highly unreliable and dangerous trading partner.
It will take decades of democratic leadership to fully restore world trust in America.
