Donald Trump lent support for convicted French far-right leader, Marine Le Pen in a post on Truth Social early Friday morning. Le Pen was convicted of embezzlement for using E.U. funds to personally enrich herself and members of her party: National Rally. She was barred from running for office for five years and sentenced to two years in prison and fined €100,000.
Trump called the charges against Le Pen a "Witch Hunt" and said it was an example of "European Leftists using Lawfare to silence Free Speech." Le Pen has accused prosecutors of seeking a "political death sentence."
Le Pen will appeal the fine and the prison term but will not be able to run for president of France in 2027 when Emmanuel Macron's term ends. She was widely considered a strong contender for the office, and the far-right leader with the best chance of any in Europe to become a head of state. She will also be unable to defend her seat in parliament in the next election.
Right on cue, Elon Musk, who has championed European fascist movements for months – going so far as to endorse and back the AfD party in Germany in recent elections – posted Trump's message to X, writing "Free Le Pen!"
