Cassie Semyon @casssemyon 12mHouse Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is asking Speaker Mike Johnson for a debate on the House floor on the Republican Budget Resolution:

Chuck Schumer @SenSchumer 1h
The Senate passed our resolution undoing Trumps reckless and inflationary trade war with Canada.
Its sitting on Speaker Johnsons desk.

This is a game of inches, and the slim republican majority is as politically vulnerable as we make the political atmosphere toxic surrounding their legislative actions.

(22,154 posts)What responses do the rules afford Johnson? I ask because I am very unclear about how this stuff works.
Is Johnson required to respond to this request in some fashion? Is he allowed to simply ignore it or deny it without any explanation or discussion? Or does protocol call for him to grant it?
I need to study up on things like this (e.g., rules of how the House and Senate operate, powers of the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader, etc,). If anyone knows of a good source, pleasure share it here.

(22,154 posts)Afaik, the Repubs in Congresa are still at least pretending to follow the rules. And knowing what the rules are supposed to be enables us to know when they're breaking them, and how severely. I therefore believe this information is far from irrelevant and am still hoping someone will have an actual answer.

(22,154 posts)I really appreciate getting a real response to this question.
I don't think we're quite at the point yet where none of the rules imply anymore, at least where Congress is concerned. Imo, we're in a weird in-between place where we don't know which rules are going to be ignored when. If we don't know how things are supposed to work, we won't be able to tell when we're getting snookered.

(93,319 posts)...which is where these political and legislative actions intend to drive republican senators and representatives to vote in their own political interest, especially as the president's own political support looks weak and damaging.

(20,428 posts)Many presidents would only get as far as the heading, but even that is too much of a read for this guy.
Someone would have to read it to him as he pretended to pay attention, and there will be no volunteers for that job.
