(1,433 posts)Well…..not to exaggerate at all
Mmmm, Let’s put it this way…
A LOT of leaders in the Middle East knew my late father
back in the 1950s 1960s 1970s, and a ‘little’ in later years 80s.
Knew, him, and they still would remember him even years later.
For instance….
Sadat’s widow, Jehan Sadat, greeted my father by name at a chance meeting
in late 1988.in the states, at an exclusive fine dining Italian restaurant she welcomed him by his first name,
She instantly gestured to her security to allow him,,,,
(But her security also kept away another person who she didn’t know who started to approach)
ADD THIS…
There are a few cables on line in the National Archives that reference my late father,
For example: Kissinger sent cables, a few cables to US Embassies,
Iran, Brazil, Egypt, etc
even one cable about my father I found from Kissinger to Moscow US Embassy if you can believe that! (I knew nothing about that until I saw hat cable)
But overall, the info in those cables was disappointing, not
really much of anything.
ALL what I want to know is still classified,
And when they so-called released the declassified stuff “the CIA Family Jewels”
It failed to include almost EVERYTHING I wanted to see.
The National Security Archives at George Washington University has told me
Multiple times to me… It’s really unlikely they, the CIA NSA will ever declassify what my father did.

(19,136 posts)My father was also well-known during the Truman and Kennedy administrations. However memories, even the institutional ones, decay over time - as they should.

(1,433 posts)I never really knew what my father did,
We knew he was someone that went to countries all across the globe,
As we were children—- that’s all we knew was…Dad ‘built’ communication
systems, and he was a senior executive for a BIG CORPORATION
Dad was in Iran, Dad was in Saudi Arabia, Dad was in Spain,
…..Dad was in Turkey,… Dad was in Syria, …Ethiopia, …Egypt,
Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Cuba, Brazil,
Later we realized it was a LOT MORE than what we were led to believe.
I remember the shock after he died of seeing some of his old Calendars
from 1960s ….all the entries for WashDC, WashDC, WashDC…..
Dozens and dozens entries/dates for WashDC…….and we never knew of that.
After the fact we surmised….. NSA and CIA, and Senate Intelligence Committee members ‘meetings’
Dad was formally invited to EVERY US Presidential Inauguration from
JFK thru Clinton…….Republican and Democratic both.
Only President that didn’t was BushSR,,,,, think it was personal reason.
BushSR was CIA too.
Also think my father ‘got out’ of the spook business just prior to all
the crap in Reagan era.
Dad ‘knew’ ,,, I’m fairly sure of this,,, ‘knew’ what was going on way BEFORE
Reagan’s IRAN/CONTRA crap became public.
Way too many connections, and ties to Vietnam, Thailand, CIA NSA, AND
of course IRAN.
Dad was in IRAN all the time for decades,

(1,433 posts)Those books by James Bamford allowed thousands of National Security types/people who were employed/working for NSA CIA to inform their spouses and family about the NSA.
BODY OF SECRETS
This book is a LOT about what my father was ‘involved’ in…..
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Puzzle_Palace
THE PUZZLE PALACE
those 2 books about NSA are fantastic information
But, and a BIG BUT,,,, a lot is very dry reading, and boring IF you don’t
know or realize the connections that the book may skip or not tell
you the connections
Best to be knowledgeable BEFORE reading those books.

(19,136 posts)At that time I worked in the periphery of that world and knew some of something. Good hangout: Charley's Place. Or Au Pied de Cochon. It was hard to hang out in a bar without someone knowing too much.
I think we're in a stranger world than fiction. And one that even the best intelligence analysts couldn't have foretold - or if they did, they were silenced.

(1,433 posts)Again my sister tends to exaggerate,,,
But I believe her in this instance…..
She went to Rice University, and a classmate/friend of hers was
from Jordon.
At Rice University graduation the parents from Jordon
greeted my parents — and of course the Jordon father knew
my father by name, apparently very well.
Think he was the equivalent of the US Attorney General,
But called by another govt title in Jordon.
Later my sister said she was told by that Jordanian father something like this
After my father left for awhile……….
‘I can’t tell you how much the country of Jordon owes him for all he has done to help Jordon’
Or he said something like that.
I guess I believe my sister,
And I was indeed aware my father was in Jordan many times
And knew that King Hussein (who died years ago)
IrishBubbaLiberal
(1,433 posts)Dad was summoned to testify to various Congressional hearings,
BUT from what I have found in the public records,
He was indeed originally summoned to testify,
BUT as far as I know…..it was then ALWAYS CANCELLED.
so he never testified in public.
I assume he likely did testify in private,
Even years later, when the Iron Curtain fell,
My parents visited Czechoslovakia,,,
He still had to get the ‘ok’ to travel to a former Soviet
country, apparently approved first from WashDC (NSA?)
And when he got to Prague,,, GUESS WHAT?
APPARENTLY even though Soviets were no longer,
Some KGB type person or persons followed my father everywhere
Mom and Dad went…..to museums…..followed…..to Brno….followed
I guess the KGB still was ‘interested’ to know what he was doing there.
Followed them everywhere, openly following them

Many years ago we had a falling out on that subject and we have just reconnected. They know where we are parked, but we don’t know where they are after all this crap with trump so we don’t say a word. He’s a republican, she follow his word on everything. He is an intelligent man and we cannot believe he in OK with trump, but we will never know. So be it.

(2,937 posts)Ideally, don’t show up. If that meant the streets would be empty, great. But it doesn’t—MAGAts will come from everywhere to attend. So holding signs relating the cost of the parade with the cost of cancer research seems to me to be the best way to get the message across. I doubt MAGAts even know that he has cut that research. They just want to kneel and worship him.

Eliminating cancer research is something that Biden or Harris would never have done.
Cancer research saved my life.
I was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1990.
It returned in 2019 after two remissions.
I went 4 unsuccessful treatments over 2 years; all failed.
The 5th treatment was successful; the drug had only been approved by FDA the year before in 2020.
Also, when lymphoma returns, it gets more aggressive and resistant to prior therapies.
Also, I told my MAGA family members, that if my lymphoma returns and Trump in any way is partly responsible for my lack of treatment options, I will not be silent.
I will write my story.
They are more horrified that I would make Trump look bad than anything.
Also, Biden was VP when the ACA passed. ACA provides me with protections against lifetime limits which under the pre-ACA world, I would have already passed. And Trump wanted to repeal the ACA. Harris as US Senator voted against the repeal.

Elsewhere in DC, same day, same hour, someone needs to hold a 4-mile parade of clowns, fantastical floats, and brazenly bleating kazoo bands.

Almost two dozen repositories of research and public health data supported by the National Institutes of Health are marked for “review” under the Trump administration’s direction, and researchers and archivists say the data is at risk of being lost forever if the repositories go down.
“The problem with archiving this data is that we can’t,” Lisa Chinn, Head of Research Data Services at the University of Chicago, told 404 Media. Unlike other government datasets or web pages, downloading or otherwise archiving NIH data often requires a Data Use Agreement between a researcher institution and the agency, and those agreements are carefully administered through a disclosure risk review process.
A message appeared at the top of multiple NIH websites last week that says: “This repository is under review for potential modification in compliance with Administration directives.”
Repositories with the message include archives of cancer imagery, Alzheimer’s disease research, sleep studies, HIV databases, and COVID-19 vaccination and mortality data.

(19,136 posts)There are thousands (or orders of magnitude more) or robots/spiders/scrapers scanning every available web site and page looking for new data.
Much of those successfully scanned pages end up in some archive. Many of those archives are publicly available. Witness the WayBackMachine.
Until this regime tries to put these archives out of business - perhaps another "EO".
Of course the most useful to many of us is Wikipedia and the other offshoots. These have already been mentioned as targets. Full downloads of current content are available to take to your bunker.
