House might bar lawmakers from trying to curtail Trump’s tariff authority

Republicans on the House Rules Committee quietly approved language that would bar the House from voting on legislation that could roll back President Donald Trump’s latest tariffs.
If the rule is adopted Wednesday afternoon, the directive would effectively halt an attempt by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-New York) to force a floor vote on his bill that would halt Trump’s latest national emergency declaration that has roiled world markets. The pause on such legislation would last until October if adopted.
Several House Republicans have expressed concerns over Trump’s retaliatory tariffs remaining in place for too long, with a handful of moderates expressing openness to reining in the president’s ability to issue them. There were legitimate worries within leadership that had Meeks moved his bill under a discharge petition, it could receive the necessary 218 signatures to force the House to vote on it.
This is not the first time GOP leadership has tried to preemptively block votes on Trump’s tariff decisions and shield lawmakers from possibly rebuking the president. Last month, Republicans adopted a rule with similar language that prevented the House from considering bills curtailing Trump’s first “national emergency” targeting China, Mexico and Canada with tariffs.
Democrats were quick to put Republicans, particularly vulnerable ones representing swing districts, on notice if they were to support Wednesday’s rule.
“House Republicans will today vote to tank the economy, destroy retirement savings, lay off workers, and raise prices. HMP thanks them for writing our ads for us,” said CJ Warnke, communications director for House Majority PAC.
