We're gonna need a "Truth and Reconciliation" moment to get past the societal damage that will happen under Trump.

(30,027 posts)It's only been 3 months. Can we survive another 45 months as a United States under the present administration?
On edit. Of course, we could stop this tomorrow if a 1/2 dozen Republicans in the House and 3 Senators in the Senate declared they were now Independents and caucusing with the Democrats. We could impeach and dispose of this POS tomorrow. 1st order of business, ensuring heavy security for these brave Americans.

We have the Constitution as an example, but we must reconcile that the designers/thinkers of that time, while "enlightened," could not anticipate the proclivity of individualism over responsibility to our fellow man.
Even the courts today, are scattered with identity over the ideology of the rule of law.
Elections have consequences. Reducing the influence of money in elections might be a good start.

They control our government. Until they have a deep examination of conscience, there will be no confession. No catharsis.
They are on Earth II.
We cannot beat that mob.
We can get to the philosopher in them alone.
Maybe we need psyops?

(97,318 posts)We have a powerful urge to turn our backs on the shameful, and pretend we never did that.
True — in the Civil Rights era it was mostly Dems who tried to do the work of repair and reconciliation, but we tend ultimately to be outnumbered. Poor LBJ, for all the good he did and tried to do that is now being entirely undone (Head Start turned 60 just in time to be smashed to nothing by trump) .
You make a good point — I just don’t think I will live to see it. Lay the groundwork now, so there will be others who will take up the banner.

(24,098 posts)Our world allies no longer trust us at all. Sure, this is just Trump but half of those who voted put him in power and why would they ever believe that wouldn't happen again? This is far worse than slave/free because then there was a line that separated the North from the South. Today you have maga cultists and Trumpers living on the same block as the sane who love and support our Constitution.
So there will be no reset.

(1,230 posts)I’m no longer on speaking terms with my sister, and I don’t know a way to fix that. I’m not even sure I care to. Her racism led her to vote for a President who would cheerfully deport my (US citizen) Mexican-American wife, and her entire family (also all US citizens), if he had any bad reason. My sister said we just have a difference of opinion about immigration, but this is a real crisis; my wife is afraid to go out alone, and I’m afraid for her as well. Also, my wife absolutely wants nothing to do with my sister. This is far from the only division between us, but it’s the biggest. How do we reconcile that kind of conflict, in families all across the nation?

(795 posts)Or something like the New Deal to rebuild America. Biden passed a lot of legislation that funded economic development, and it was working (American Rescue Plan, for example, allocated $1.9 trillion dollars into economic stimulus. Also- Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, CHIPS and Science Act, Inflation Reduction Act, etc.). We could emulate those programs. So we can rebuild the economy but also rebuild the Federal Government that Trump Musk has been destroying. A New Deal type project to rebuild the Federal Government and revitalize the economy.
As far as holding Trump, Musk, and MAGA responsible- a Democratically controlled Congress could open a "Truth and Reconciliation Inquiry". We could definitely sort out who did what and make appropriate criminal referrals to a revived DOJ under a Democratic President. It would be a big project, but it could be done with the right leadership and Democratic control over the Congress and the White House.
The biggest investigation in FBI history was that of the January 6th Insurrection. That was well done and it was successful until Trump pardoned the rioters. The only failure of that investigation was that the people at the top (Trump especially) were not brought to justice. Anyway, a Truth and Reconciliation Task Force in Congress would be a great way to spend four to eight years under Democratic rule. That and a revitalized economy would be great also.

(30,027 posts)Trump-proof future Presidencies. Then T/R Trump's ass.
Limiting executive powers and clarifying checks and balances would be important. Also maybe make it unconstitutional for a convicted felon to hold high office (presidency, vice president). There are a lot of reforms that could be done.
I think the Presidential pardon power has been abused. I believe that it should be limited. Maybe a President could propose pardons but they must be approved by the Senate. So that is just one reform idea. There are probably a number of others possible. Ten year term limits for Supreme Court Justices might be another. That would make a President's appointment power to be less permanent, which would help, I think.
