Assad was similar to Saddam Hussein - brutal dictator who killed those who opposed him, but tolorated the Christian minority. Saddam's own VP was a Christian. Assad visited a Christian church when Isis bombed it.

supported Assad. Not like they loved him but more that they saw him as helping to prevent Islamists from going after them.

And their opposition to Assad had to do with him being Shia.
