(24,609 posts)Never not made my membership fees back. Costco backs up everything Ive ever had to return. The folks that work there feel like friends, theyve been there for so long.

(252 posts)we ate our way through their chocolate raisins and biscotti.....for the jars.
So now we have storage for the cereals, rice, beans, flour, cookies, screws & nails, etc, etc, and so forth.

(20,574 posts)As well as received my new Costco Citi VISA card that I will use for all my expenses besides rent. Earn cash back as I spend for what I need. I have been a Costco Executive Member since 2013. LOVE Costco!

(163 posts)Truthfully, we don't got that often because we're a two-person household and the closest stores are about six miles away. We have other local options that are much closer, usually more economical and are either blue, politically neutral or at the very least slightly more democratic than not but, in some cases, are the only store that carries some particular item we need (and we do vote with our wallets in this house). They do have great deals on a lot of things; for some things, we don't always have the storage space or can't finish stuff before it goes bad.
However, I'm so proud of the corporate citizen they are that I don't want to NOT support them (that little thing with the abortion pills aside...pisses me off no end, because women's rights is one of my KEY issues, but I guess nobody's perfect...I don't use their pharmacy and it's not like CVS or Walgreens is ANY better on that front).

(35,517 posts)it did make a lot of sense when we still had teens in the house. We buy whatever we can there.

(40,048 posts)Costco seems to have their collective hearts in the right place but ....
It's not the membership cost, either, I think their membership is fair. It's that everything is sold in large quantities. It's not a savings for me when I can't store 6 month's worth of everything they sell. Even when I shop at my regular grocery store - in the Pittsburgh area I shop in Giant Eagle and Aldi's - even there I'm forced to buy certain things in larger quantities.
I'm a single, older woman and I'm okay with buying quantities of items that will last me one month, such as toilet paper, paper towels, canned goods, dried goods, etc. I can store those items in my house, either in the kitchen or in the basement. But Costco (also Sam's Club) expects me to buy 6 months' worth of the same product and I can't store all that. Nor do I want to. I don't have a large freezer or pantry.
Costco is marketed for large families in big houses, not for singles or even older couples.

(967 posts)You cannot beat the price of hearing aids and the service that follows their purchase at no extra charge. Eyeglasses are the same. I have been a member for a long time and always manage to get an annual Costco refund check that is more than I paid for the membership.
They also have great gas and offer discounts on EV charging if you use their credit card to purchase.

(2,601 posts)you can save a lot on gas. When I go into Costco I rarely see much of anything that I really want, but I do get their gasoline, and the savings I get on their gasoline over the course of one year, covers their membership cost.

(2,601 posts)Sam's Club is owned by the Waltons, isn't it? I think Costco is much more progressive and pays its workers relatively better. The part of my post about Costco using DEI and Costco suing the Trump administration is true I believe.

(684 posts)But Pleasant staff and working electric scooter carts have made this my favorite store
Ive really cut back, but Costco is one of three stores I go to frequently for my essentials, many of which last only a few days to a month, so work well for one or two people. I think I save enough for my basic membership at least, but for the pleasant (midweek) experience alone it feels worth it, even if I leave with just a few items and having enjoyed a sample or two.
Here are Some things off the top of my head that I get regularly or when on a fairly frequent sale:
Gas! Cheapest in town
Eggs (18 pkg)
raspberries, blueberries, Grapes
Scalloped potatoes (fridge section, sale)
Salmon/cheese/crackers snack. (Yum!) (fridge)
String cheese
Frozen chicken (strips, thighs, etc)
Chicken pita sandwiches (frozen)
Tortillas (low carb, bag, lasts)
Coffee (watch for sale)
Better than bouillon (great for soups)
Vitamins (sales)
Pain relievers: Ibuprofen, voltaren, etc.
Shampoo
Quinol (sale)
Nuts
Protein bars
Chips
Bulk:
Laundry soap
Paper products (sales)
Pkg of electric toothbrushes (sales)
Toothpaste 3 pkg
Sometimes they have good deals on shoes, clothes, appliances, etc. and easy returns! I also like them for eyeglasses. Also vaccinations, even if not your regular pharmacy. I sometimes do my covid booster there, walk up and not much wait, then do shopping
I swear, I was paid nothing for this promotion, lol! Just a happy customer.

(211 posts)Shampoo can be put in one's cart without unlocking anything. I just about never see little kids taking things off shelves opening the package and eating cookies or something while mom ignores them.
Asian Americans like it a lot.

(4,288 posts)OK, that is complete fiction which I just made up now---
but a headline I would like to read someday,
and would make me MORE likely to pay for a membership---
even though I don't currently have a working vehicle! LOL
Also would enjoy hearing the maggots cry over that fictional headline

(25,693 posts)They are allowing apartments to be built on the roofs of some stores, including low-income options. Amid a housing shortage, this seems like a win-win.

(1,622 posts)Tried a free membership promoted at work a few years ago and was underwhelmed
It was creepy wandering the aisles full of people with their giant trolleys overflowing with monster-sized stuff, with multiple 24-packs of soda and water hanging on the sides.
Why is everything a giant container? Maybe $10 is a good price, but I dont *need* so much stuff that Id have to buy a shed for the overflow
Why not just have regular-sized stuff at good prices, too?
And the produce? Almost nothing was organic, and the quality was just not there.
I really wanted to love it, but given the offerings, it just wasnt worth driving miles through seasonal Sarasota traffic to spend quadruple on groceries when Trader Joes was half the distance.
Maybe it would feel more worth the effort if we werent down to a family of two. Seems like they might want to consider that demographics are changing in that regard.
