The general populace would never admit that they supported the regime. Even as it imprisoned, killed out right, or worked their neighbors to death. Even though they lived a stones throw from a Buchenwald subcamp. Even though slave laborers, Jews, political prisoners, Poles, Czechs, Dutch, French, Russians, etc. were inescapable. They knew exactly what was going on. After what he saw, dad hated them for it. To his dying day as far as I know.
