When Charlie Kirk was killed by an assassin this fall, Republican leaders credited the organization he founded for enabling President Trump's return to power.
Now that organization is mobilizing behind Vice President JD Vance.
Uninterested in a competitive Republican primary in 2028, Turning Point USA plans to deploy representatives across Iowas 99 counties in the coming months to build the campaign infrastructure it believes could deliver Vance, a Midwesterner from nearby Ohio, a decisive victory, potentially short-circuiting a fractious GOP race, insiders said.
It is the latest move in a quiet effort by some in Trumps orbit to clear the field of viable competitors. Earlier this month, Marco Rubio, the secretary of State previously floated by Trump as a possible contender, appeared to take himself out of the running.

(2,232 posts)Vance has been playing hard to the MAGA base as it is shrinking. Meanwhile, he just isn't a very likable personality. Of course he will have Theil and lots of other money behind him. But 2026 and 2028 should be referendums on Trump, and Vance = Trump.
I'm not saying Vance can't win. But this is probably the best scenario for us.

I also think that pushing Vance is overall a bad choice for republicans. He is unlikable and represents more of the same. Inflation, malaise, government endorsed hatred.

(38,127 posts)They are coalescing around Vance because Trump is term-limited. Period.
Whatever he believes about his imaginary ability to decide not to run for a third term is propaganda and shouldn't be reported as news - or as a click-bait headline. The article, at least, makes it clear that Trump is constitutionally barred from a third term. A headline shouldn't make it appear that it is his choice.
(I know that is the actual headline on the article - but we ought not carry Trump's water by repeating it.)
