I did look and didn't see it but even if it was this is so important it should be posted a hundred times.
You might ask "why is it important Angrychair?"
Good question.
It is another attack on the poor and disenfranchised.
Here is the basics of what has happened: the old rule postmarked your mail the day you mailed it.
The new rule states that it will now be postmarked the day it arrives at the automated processing facility.
You may ask "what's the difference?"
Good question.
The difference could, very literally, be days different.
You could mail something on a Monday and it could not get postmarked until Wednesday or Thursday or even later depending on processing volume. In fact, there is absolutely no guaranteed timeframe when it happens. None.
You may ask "how does that impact me?"
Good question.
It will impact everything from mail-in voting to Medicare appeals to late payment of bills.
It will also disproportionately impact the poor and disenfranchised.
This is a very big fucking deal.

(11,647 posts)One of the suggestions I have seen posted several times is to physically take it into the post office and have it manually postmarked. That is a valid solution when possible.

(134 posts)It is about privatizing the postal service. I could go on, but too tired right now.
Just know corporate interests want to chop up the postal service. They are going to wreck it and then say
see, it doesn't work. We should privatize it. They've been wrecking it for decades. Under these conditions,
it does look bleak.

(134 posts)If you mailed a letter in Madison going to a Madison address it gets there the next day.
Then some years ago they took our sorting machines to Milwaukee, so if you sent a letter 2 blocks away at a Madison address
It would go all the way to be sorted in Milwaukee and then sent back to Madison! And a letter going from here to there and back again took 2 days. Bastards!

(7,429 posts)I've lost all faith in the US Postal Service. trump killed it when he put dejoy in charge, and dejoy started in on demolishing it. These days, I can get three mail runs in a single day... including one after 10pm (!)... or I may go a whole week without any mail at all. Considering how much "mail" is simply scams in the mailbox, I doubt I could go two days with some sort of junk mail showing up! I have invoices that have never gotten to me, and has cost me extra in late fees because of the untimeliness of the mail system. BUT it IS one of the main services to The People which is actually accounted for IN the Constitution. I'm assuming they'd have to go through the Constitutional change process before they could kill it completely... and that must drive them crazy enough to do what they're doing. Like I said, trump wants to completely kill the US as a first-world country. Hell, he'd have Russia annex us if there was a way he could do it and be "king."

(95,680 posts)How could it be used to "commit voter fraud"? Sounds more like they will just negate any ballots without a date. Anything to suppress the vote. MAGA!
Pretty sad that Illinois and other states would have their votes nullified because of a mail in ballot.

(95,680 posts)I am pissed every damn day the orange POS took office. He is destroying this country and alienating our allies. He has declared war on half this country, sending troops, our troops, our military, into blue cities to intimidate our own people!
He and the idiot rfk jr are taking away our healthcare and destroying all of our research and development that make us safer and healthier.
All the while the POS is enriching himself and destroying the rest of our America.
So yes, I am pissed!

(4,027 posts)The goal is to make it seem that the postal service is broken and that private companies (those privateers) will do a better job. The postal service is in the Constitution.
My husband is a retired letter carrier. Prefunding the retirement of every employee, removing sorting machines, sending all mail to a central processing station, and now? Not even postmarking it until it gets there. Who knows if local stations will have a machine still to do the postmarking if you take it in and ask them to hand mark it.
It is critical to educate everyone now and often, especially before the primaries and general election.

(14,766 posts)Corporations and now our government want everyone to be forced to pay bills and do all other business on-line to save them money.
They're doing this by squeezing mail transit time so it's now difficult to avoid late payment fees. Many old folks like me will become discouraged and start paying on-line, although I will not. They also apply constant pressure to use auto-pay which I refuse to do!
Question for corporations and government: considering you want us to conduct all our business on-line (saving you tons of money), when are you going to start paying our monthly $70 internet service bills?
Thanks for this post, angrychair......
