I served below decks on the ships in the boiler rooms, and once crawled much too close to a steam leak to cut off a valve and shut it down (lost my hearing for a while). But the VA tested my hearing a couple of years ago, and told me that hearing aids wouldn't really help.
I didn't realize I was trying to compensate for it by watching faces.
