Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) alleged that his party has a double standard when it comes to antisemitism in a Sunday opinion piece for The New York Times.
Across the Democratic Partys ideological spectrum, right-wing hate is consistently condemned. Today, too many Democrats are noticeably and shamefully silent when antisemitism comes from the far left at a moment when the Anti-Defamation League is reporting a surge of antisemitic incidents in the past three years. Its a glaring double standard, Gottheimer wrote in his opinion piece.
Consider the response to really, the embrace of Hasan Piker, a prominent left-wing commentator with millions of online followers. He referred to Orthodox Jews as inbred and said America deserved 9/11, both statements he halfheartedly walked back, he added.
Gottheimer also added in his piece that Piker said that Hamas a designated terrorist organization that has killed Americans and taken Americans hostage is a thousand times better than Israel, Americas ally, which he called a fascist settler colonial apartheid state.

And they were butchered and murdered.
Mahalo for exposing Piker, Rep, Josh Gottheimer

(2,916 posts)If you go back 25 years you'll find posts talking about blow back. Meaning of course that the US armed and trained the Mujahedin, including the Taliban and by extension Al Qaeda.
Given the context that was what Piker meant.
Is Hamas better than Israel? Well it is Israel committing genocide and the body count of innocent victims flipped to the Israeli side before that year ended.
We've had a fun year and a half as Jewish college students are called antisemitic for protesting that genocide and universities being extorted by this administration for allowing those protests.
Whatever Hasan Piker's faults the evidence of him being antisemitic are very selective.

(85,901 posts)There's no context that justifies that. If a Nazi SS officer gave to charity, he was still a Nazi.

(2,031 posts)Even if you agree with some of his talk about Israel being bad, siding with Hamas and saying rapes don't matter should be disqualifying as being in reasonable public affairs.

(10,063 posts)Anyone running for office using him on their campaign should lose badly and go away. All that being said the Democratic party does a good job calling out antisemitism and this Rep is wrong.

Shouldn't people have the right to boycott whoever they want? Isn't being against that anti-Democratic?

(10,063 posts)But I think someone who supports Israel so much they are willing to take away your freedom to boycott doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt but deserves scrutiny and doubt in whatever they say. I mean really, the guy supports Israel so much he put forward a bill to curtail Americans freedoms. I dont have to wonder what side he is on.
