FL-20: Wasserman Schultz running in redrawn Florida district

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) announced Friday she’s running for another term in Congress in a new district after GOP-led redistricting backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis roiled the Sunshine State.

“Today, I’m announcing my candidacy for Florida’s 20th congressional district. I’ll continue to use my seniority in Washington to make Broward a safer, less expensive place to live, raise a family, and retire. We cannot let [President] Trump and DeSantis take away Broward County’s power,” said Wasserman Schultz, who currently represents the 25th Congressional District, which was dismantled under the new congressional map.

The deep-blue 20th District was previously held by Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who resigned from Congress last month amid allegations of financial misconduct that were poised to lead to her expulsion from the chamber.

But Cherfilus-McCormick is already running again for the now-reconfigured 20th District, teeing up a Democratic primary showdown with Wasserman Schultz.

she is found guilty next year in federal court and goes to prison.

A bipartisan adjudicatory subcommittee of the House ethics committee found in March that Cherfilus-McCormick had committed 25 ethics violations, including breaking campaign finance laws.

Many of the findings stem from Cherfilus-McCormick’s receipt of millions of dollars from her family’s health care business after Florida overpaid the firm $5 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds, with the subcommittee determining much of that money helped fund her first two successful political campaigns, in 2021 and 2022.

The former congresswoman has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has entered a not guilty plea to federal criminal charges, some of which overlap with the House ethics case.

Cherfilus-McCormick faces a criminal trial next year but said it wouldn’t be a distraction from running.
