Representative Doris Matsui, 81, and her Democratic challenger, Mai Vang, 41, have won the top two spots in Californias nonpartisan primary, according to The Associated Press. That sets up a fierce intraparty generational battle for a Sacramento-area House seat.
Ms. Matsui, a Democrat, is facing the toughest re-election campaign of her 10 terms in Congress. Ms. Vang, a progressive member of the Sacramento City Council, is attempting to oust an incumbent twice her age as the party seethes with generational upheaval. The two Democrats vanquished Zachariah Wooden, a Republican college student, who came in third.
Sacramento, Californias capital city, has sent a Matsui to Congress for the last 47 years. Robert Matsui represented the region from 1979 until his death in January 2005. Two months later, his widow, Doris Matsui, was elected to fill his seat. She has won with ease ever since.
But a generational rebellion took root in the Democratic Party after Republicans swept to victory in 2024 amid concern that President Joseph R. Biden was too old to seek re-election. Ms. Vang was one of several younger Democrats who challenged older members of their party in this years primaries. She was endorsed by several national groups that back progressive candidates and ran an energetic campaign that included a fundraiser at a rock concert.

(6,774 posts)her website as her "platform" is just about nonexistent but she has got her endorsements up as well as:
Safer levees and flood protection
Lower prescription drug costs
Expanded mental health care and telehealth
Good-paying clean-energy and technology jobs
Better transportation and broadband access
Meanwhile Vang's website has a much more robust platform on what she would be fighting for. Neither have actual policy papers talking about in depth means/costs - but Vang supports Medicare For All, Taxing Billionaires, More Solutions for Homelessness, etc.
Matsui takes PAC money. Vang does not.

(29,642 posts)Her votes are solid, she shows up at No Kings rallies, her office staff are very helpful. She should have retired, but I've liked her as a Rep. I think Vang will win, and I am sure she will be a good Rep, too. Matsui does not deserve the snark that some folks toss at her.
Sacramento has a Win-Win.

(11,473 posts)I kept getting his campaign ads online. I'm not in CA-10, or near it. So he had idiots for campaign advisors, or too much money to spend, although repeatedly showing ads that proudly claimed "a vote for Wooden is a vote for Donald Trump" told voters that if elected he wouldn't lift a finger to help them.
