NJ-07: Labor-allied PAC launches robocalls against Kean

An independent political action committee backed by a coalition of progressive labor unions has launched robocalls into roughly 60,000 households in New Jersey’s 7th district focusing on Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Westfield) and his missed votes since March 5.

But the robocall, paid for by Battleground Alliance PAC, speaks only to the missed votes and not about the health-related issues that have caused Kean’s absence.

The PAC has promised to spend $50 million this year to help Democrats flip enough seats to win control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Last year, POLITICO reported that Battleground Alliance PAC is connected to “more than 30 progressive and labor organizations, including the Service Employees International Union, Working Families Party, Planned Parenthood Votes, Indivisible and MoveOn.” According to its April quarterly report filed with the Federal Election Commission, the PAC raised $767,788.

Script: “Tom Kean has been missing from Congress for over 100 days. He skipped the vote to end Trump’s war in Iran. He skipped the vote, handed ICE $70 billion. He hasn’t held a town hall or shown his face in the district since winter. A congressman who isn’t there can’t fight for you. Call Tom Kean and ask where he’s been.”

I lived in Westfield for 25 years so this one means a hell of a lot to me. And she has a serious shot at winning it!

If you can, dig deep and contribute to helping Rebecca Bennett win!!

Apparently neighbors haven't seen hide nor hair of Kean or his family. I imagine they have other properties, but I think Westfield was his primary residence.

On the day of the congressional primary, the mystery of the missing legislator remains frustratingly unsolved. But it was not for lack of trying.

Here’s how Times reporters attempted to uncover the truth.

In late April, The Times filed a request under New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act with the police department in Westfield, N.J., where Mr. Kean lives. Were there any calls to 911 or emergency services from his address? There were not.

Every political campaign files a list of donors with the Federal Election Commission. We called more than a dozen donors, including Mary Van Lieu, a former Republican mayor of Pohatcong, N.J., and Michael Fedorko, who runs public safety in Atlantic County, N.J., and donated $600 to Mr. Kean's re-election. None of them had any information about Mr. Kean’s condition.

Beginning in April, a Times reporter visited Mr. Kean’s primary residence in Westfield, N.J., several times. Some neighbors said they had not seen Mr. Kean or noticed any changes at the house. All declined to be quoted. A knock on Mr. Kean’s door went unanswered.
