CA-11: For months, Wiener (D) had a clear path to Congress. Now, not so much

But he topped his closest opponent, Supervisor Connie Chan, by only 11 (opens in new tab) percentage points. Chan had never run a major citywide campaign. She raised only a quarter of the money Wiener did and, unlike him, ran without the backing of well-funded PACs. To top it off, votes that may have gone to her were split with another progressive candidate, Saikat Chakrabarti.

The electorate could not have been better primed for a Wiener shutout. It didn’t happen.

Sam Lauter, a principal at public affairs firm BMWL, thinks it will be a competitive contest when Chan and Wiener move to the general election in November.

“It’s definitely Scott’s race to lose, but anyone counting out Connie Chan is making a mistake,” Lauter said. Both, he noted, are tireless. “They’re going to wear out the soles of their shoes, because they’re going to be walking up and down the hills and knocking on doors. It’s going to be a lot of old-school campaigning.”
