(131,706 posts)that he couldn't deliver. The pool has always been afflicted with algae because it's only 30" deep, isn't aerated by something like a fountain, gets heated by the sun, and collects fertilizer from ducks and geese. Trump complained that it was Obama's fault (of course) that the pool got scummy with algae, as it always has, and he promised to fix the problem by treating it as if it were a swimming pool, which it is not, and painting it with a supposedly leak-proof dark blue paint. But the pool has other problems, which were not fixed. There's a good explanation of those problems here: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/05/31/us/trump-reflecting-pool-problems.html?unlocked_article_code=1.qVA.Hbdd.gbkvbjqGoMdC&smid=url-share The reality is that no matter what is done, there will be algae in the pool. It can be controlled but it won't go away altogether; they'll always be fighting it. Algae are plant-adjacent creatures that thrive on warm, still water and goose poo. They can kill it off temporarily at great expense with environmentally-dangerous chemicals but it will come back. Trump promised a beautiful blue swimming pool-like appearance that was completely impossible to achieve. Nature always bats last, and just like Putin and Netanyahu and Iran, the algae has made Trump its bitch.

Darker surfaces absorb more sunlight and heat than lighter ones, which in shallow water can raise temperatures and increase the energy available for algae growthpotentially accelerating reproduction rates.
Lowe said this effect could be significant, as darker surfaces effectively act as a heat source. "The darker an object the more light it absorbs and the warmer it gets," he said, adding that this can create "perfect conditions for algae to bloom" in shallow, sunlit water.
