Two African lions at the Birmingham Zoo have made a full recovery from symptoms of COVID-19 after testing positive for the virus, the zoo announced Friday.
Kwanza, a male, and Akili, a female, tested positive for the virus after zoo personnel noticed last week that Kwanza had a slight decrease in appetite and Akili had mild sneezing.
An outside lab confirmed the lions had SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19; testing at the U.S.D.A.s National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the results.
No other animals at the zoo have displayed symptoms of the virus.
While Kwanza and Akili have fully recovered from their symptoms, they remain under observation and fecal samples will be collected from the lions to determine when the virus is no longer present in their systems, the zoo said.
