Chuck Schumer Reelected Senate Democratic Leader For The Fifth Time

Source: Huff Post

Dec 3, 2024, 11:22 AM EST

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday was unanimously reelected as the Senate Democratic leader for the fifth consecutive time.

“I am honored and humbled to be chosen by my colleagues to continue leading Senate Democrats during this crucial period for our country,” Schumer said in a statement. “Our caucus has led the way in passing historic legislation that has improved the lives of millions of Americans and we remain laser focused on addressing the most pressing challenges facing our country.”

Senate Democrats also unanimously voted to approve their new leadership team for the 119th Congress, which kicks off in January with Donald Trump heading back to the White House.

Democratic leaders will mostly be the same as they’ve been in this Congress, with Schumer at the top and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) keeping his No. 2 post as the Democratic whip. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) will keep their posts as vice chairs of the Democratic Caucus. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) will keep her title as the caucus’ secretary.

I'm sure I've missed some other outspoken reps, & maybe I've missed the senate firebrands, too. ???

on edit: Maybe Warren, certainly Bernie.

The rest of the OP article at the link notes "Warren", "Sanders", and now "Booker" in "leadership" positions (all who have been outspoken).

Some other activist Senators are less senior like Fetterman, who is obviously a "populist firebrand" and now about to become "the Senior Senator from Pennsylvania". I expect the incoming NJ Junior Senator - Andy Kim - is going to make some waves as might Ruben Gallego as Junior Senator from AZ.

even with his often bombastic style (I think he still wears shorts to the chamber), he hasn't been in there long enough to take complete root.

ETA - don't forget that Adam Schiff is about to join that "august body".

How could I forget the melon head on a pencil neck? LOL

For those who don't remember, Trump called Schiff a pencil neck. Then sometime later he called him a melon head. In an interview on MSNBC, Schiff was asked about the names & said, "I guess I'm a melon head on a pencil neck." My husband & I LOLd.

and considering the perilous path we now are facing, his experience and knowledge of same is essential. Congratulations Senator Schumer, you're the best.

Sometimes they overlap, sure, but I like Jeffries as dem house leader, & Raskin, Crockett, AOC, & Swalwell as rebel rousers. I was just wondering who our senate firebrands are & Warren & Bernie were the only two I could think of. Chris Murphy gets interviewed quite a bit & Sheldon Whitehouse has that excellent series of videos on SCOTUS & dark money but none of that ever goes viral.

It was on Gary Peters as Chair of the DSCC (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee).

But Democrats knew it was a hard map. The 2026 map will be harder for (R)s.

The American voters decided that the democrats in the senate were not worthy of retaining a majority. Schumer is the leader it is his job to make gains for the constituents of democratic senators, he failed (at least in the eye's of the voters), lost the majority. I think he should go, the same for Jeffries in the house. The democrats were taken down in this election by the most corrupt and incompetent politician of all time, most of the GOP in the house and senate are just as corrupt and incompetent. If we can't win against these people than something needs to change, that change starts at the top.

Not quite. The seats that were lost were in states that voted for 45 - WV, MT, OH, and unfortunately this go-around, PA (which has only rarely had 2 (D) Senators).

HOWEVER (D)s have gained a (D) (Ruben Gallego) to replace the intransigent (I) Kristen Sinema.

It had nothing to do with the operations of the Senate but with what was going on in the-above named states. Everyone knew that WV would be lost when Manchin stepped down and MT's Tester had only barely won his previous 2 elections.

Remember that Schumer had been a "Leader" in 2020 (when (D)s took the Senate back after 6 years) and 2022 (when we gained a seat).

It's all in the map. The fact that we didn't have Senators wiped out in some of the other swing states like NV, WI, & MI, is a testament at maintaining what we could.

The country is pretty evenly divided all elections are going to be close. Giving the house and senate to Trump is going to be a disaster, we couldn't afford to lose the senate, Chuck needs to go, just my opinion.
