Military pauses Osprey flights again after more metal failures are found in near-crash in November

The Pentagon is temporarily pausing flights again of its V-22 Osprey fleet after weakened metals in a part inside one of the aircraft broke apart in flight in November, causing an engine failure and a near crash in New Mexico, based on an initial investigation of the incident.

The pause was recommended last week by Vice Adm. Carl Chebi, the head of Naval Air Systems Command, and went into effect Monday morning, Navy spokesman Cmdr. Tim Hawkins said.

Both the Navy and Air Force are adhering to the voluntary operational pause, which is indefinite as the services look at how the safety issue can be mitigated. The Marine Corps did not immediately return a request for comment as to whether its aircraft would also adhere to the operational pause.

It's the latest problem for the military's embattled Osprey aircraft. An in-depth investigation into the Osprey by The Associated Press last month found that safety issues have increased in the past five years, parts are wearing out faster than expected and that the design of the aircraft itself is directly contributing to many of the accidents.

It would probably be quicker to report on the Ospreys that haven't crashed. Orrex Dec 9 #1

Is posting on DU a FT job for you? I only ask based on the number of posts you have at any given time on LBN

who is retired. And at this junction, there are many on DU who have "cut the cord" (joining those who had already cut it years ago) so am hoping for a short period, to help "tide people over" for a bit while we process the aftermath of this past election.

And if anything, we need to have NEWS posted IN LBN rather than seeing it always dumped in General Discussion where it is often lost because that forum moves so fast (the 30 pages of threads there only go back 7 days before being archived).

(before then I was using Sludge's site as a "portal" since he had a pile of links to the major news outlets and then I found DU not only had news posted but also had a pile of links to many liberal news and blog sites - although the guys couldn't keep up with all the URL changes and stopped featuring those links).

I know I haven't had the TV on since the election but generally "read my news" (or listen to it on the radio).

And then as a sidenote, back when I was in college (and was a member of my college's radio station), my last semester senior year, I was given the Friday afternoon "drive time" (5 pm - 5:30 pm) news show and for that, I spent 4 hours gathering news (like I do here) to read over the air. The station had a sub to AP's wire service (the old teletype) and I would grab the printouts with news stories and go through their schedules for when they would send their audio feeds OTA so I could tune those in at the proper time to record on carts for later broadcast. It was a pretty fascinating side-hobby (as a chem major)!

I certainly wouldn't want to fly in one of those.

They had at least 5 chip lights and kept flying. In my bird 1 chip light was 'land as soon as possible'. (In peacetime.) The pilots made a grave error in judgement.

I guess it proves, 'even a rock will fly, for a short while'. So sad, so many had to die, to prove that old adage.

They’re fun as war porn, but they are such a waste of money just to project military power onto less-privileged people around the world.
