Jan. 6 rioter applies for asylum in Canada after refusing to report to prison for storming Capitol with his mom

Source: Law & Crime

Dec 28th, 2024, 3:36 pm

An Indiana man convicted of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6 with his mother has reportedly applied for asylum in Canada — and is already living there, apparently — after failing to report to prison over the summer to serve his sentence. Antony Vo, a former Bloomington resident, was supposed to spend nine months behind bars after being found guilty of multiple charges last year, including entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, violent entry or disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds and parading, and demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building.

But he went to Canada instead, according to the CW affiliate WISH. “Our country, ourselves, we have a long history of standing up for our rights, what we believe in,” Vo told the outlet. “The majority of Jan. 6 people have been held more than accountable.” Sources told CBS News in August that there was an “active effort” underway to find Vo after he failed to report to the federal correctional facility in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he was slated to serve out his sentence.

He had already drawn scrutiny and been reprimanded by the judge in his Jan. 6 case — U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who oversaw Donald Trump‘s election fraud case before it was axed — for violating pretrial release conditions and referring to himself as a “Jan. 6 wrongful convict,” in addition to blasting the judicial system as convicting him in a “kangaroo court.”

A source told CBS authorities suspected Vo could be in Canada, but his location couldn’t be confirmed. According to WISH, he’s currently living across the northern border with his mother — who got hit with federal charges in August for her alleged involvement in the Jan. 6 riots — as they seek refugee status.

1. Canada designated the Proud Boys as a Terrorist Organization on 3 Feb 2021.
Sun Dec 29, 2024, 03:43 AM
Dec 29

From the Government of Canada:

The Proud Boys is a neo-fascist organization that engages in political violence and was formed in 2016. Members of the group espouse misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-immigrant, and/or white supremacist ideologies and associate with white supremacist groups. The Proud Boys consists of semi-autonomous chapters located in the United States (U.S.), Canada, and internationally. The group and its members have openly encouraged, planned, and conducted violent activities against those they perceive to be opposed to their ideology and political beliefs. The group regularly attends Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests as counter-protesters, often engaging in violence targeting BLM supporters. On January 6, 2021, the Proud Boys played a pivotal role in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Leaders of the group planned their participation by setting out objectives, issuing instructions, and directing members during the insurrection. The leader of the Proud Boys was arrested two days before the insurrection as part of a stated effort by U.S. law enforcement to apprehend individuals who were planning to travel to the D.C. area with intentions to cause violence.

1) Asylum applications are taken seriously in Canada.

2) Canada generally is in no mood to forget about the extradition treaty for the criminal activities on Jan. 6, even though there are some wings of sympathizers in Pierre Axe the Tax Poilievre's Conservative Party. Look what we endured with the Two Michaels being held hostage in Chinese prison for a thousand days because Canada held the Chinese phone company CFO (in her Vancouver mansion) so the US could press charges.

3) Thus he chose the wrong country. He will be restricted and constrained in asylum status, though he would probably be able to get some employment if he wants to. The status will continue until he is extradited back or is pardoned by Mango Mussolini.

Sun Dec 29, 2024, 06:29 PM

Antony Vo will have his "day in court" so to speak with the IRB. As a more humane country, the Canadians generally move more cautiously than their brutish southern neighbor that "shoots first, asks questions later."

During the Vietnam War, the Canadian authorities in all provinces did not deport American college students seeking an escape from the draft which was a boon to their economy and population.

However, the Canadian authorities did return the few American military deserters who made their way north as they were wanted for a charged crime in the US which is an equivalent crime in Canada.

If the IRB has evidence that Mr. Vo is a member of the Proud Boys, he will be deported on the basis of his membership in a designated terrorist organization. Otherwise, we have to wait for that cockroach to fall off the wall (meaning the results of his IRB hearing).

Canada has zero tolerance about anybody with a felony conviction. You can’t even get into the country and it doesn’t matter if the conviction was 30 years ago It’s iron clad
