The funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday at the age of 100, will be held on Jan. 9 at Washington National Cathedral.
Carter will also lie in state in the Rotunda at the U.S. Capitol, the Carter Center said on Monday, after an invitation was extended to the former president's family by Congress.
Carter, the son of a peanut farmer who was elected the nations 39th president, passed away surrounded by family at his home in Plains, Georgia, just months after he became the longest-lived former chief executive in U.S. history.
President Joe Biden, who praised Carter as a "man of principle, faith, and humility," has also marked Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning for the former Democratic president. ... Biden on Monday ordered all federal agencies to be closed on Jan. 9 as a sign of respect for Carter.

(6,530 posts)Just to remind us how America can do the presidenting thing right.
And as a contrast to what is to come.

(2,218 posts)Which means he will lie in state until the evening of Wednesday, Jan 8; beginning as early as Monday, Jan 6.
Jan 6 is a strange day -- it's the 4th anniversary of Trump's attempted coup, and, it's the day Congress will meet to certify Trump's election . . . but the House must have a Speaker to convene forcing Mike "God Anointed Me Speaker" Johnson to try to collect enough votes to name him Speaker.
Regardless -- Carter will lie in state in the Rotunda beginning some time on Jan 6, maybe not until early on Jan 7, until he is removed late on Jan 8 for the funeral on Jan 9.
My daughter lives on Capitol Hill, in the shadow of the Capitol. She is in Europe now for the New Year, visiting the rebuilt Notre Dame, but will be home on Jan 4/5. So -- we live 2.5 hours out of DC, will go up on Jan 6 and get in line to visit President Carter and thank him for showing us how a decent person lives.
Daughter is coming here on Jan 19 so she is not in DC when Trump, or Elmo Muskrat, or Putin is inaugurated on Jan 20. We will spend Jan 20 with the local NAACP chapter for a reading of King's "Letter From Birmingham Jail."
