As violent crime rates appear to be falling after a pandemic-related spike, gun violence continues to plague communities around the country. In 2024, there have been nearly 500 mass shootings, according to a database maintained by Gun Violence America. The deadliest occurred in a Chicago suburb in January, killing eight people.
In light of the recent school shooting in Wisconsin, President Joe Biden spoke of his administration's work aimed at reducing gun violence, including passing the most significant gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. But more is needed, he said. States have also taken steps to pass their own gun regulations. Here is what advocates in gun policy had to say about the 2024 legislative year and a look at some laws coming into effect in the new year
How gun safety advocates and Second Amendment proponents responded to 2024 moves
By and large, the state laws related to gun safety taking effect in 2025 enforce gun safety, according to the gun violence prevention organization Everytown for Gun Safety.
Americas gun violence epidemic is not inevitable, it is the logical outcome of lawmakers callous inaction in service to the gun lobby," Monisha Henley, senior vice president for government affairs at Everytown for Gun Safety, told USA TODAY in a statement. As we head into the New Year, not a single consequential law rolling back our progress on gun safety will go into effect, but countless laws making our communities safer will. As we head into 2025 one thing remains clear: gun safety isnt just good policy, its good politics.

(405 posts)gun safety advocates will demand more laws.
And when those don't have any effect - Rinse and Repeat.
WOW - California is going to require gun purchasers be provided a PAMPLET!
How can that NOT work?
Delaware is declaring state universities Safe School Zones -- How deluded do you have to be to believe that someone on their way to murder as many people as possible will be deterred by a Safe School Zone sign.
Until we start seriously addressing mental health issues, nothing is going to change.

(144,778 posts)but one must continue to "educate" the young (and the masses) to whittle the mess down to the pure criminal element (which are often unreachable).
E.g., as long as this type of thing is going on - TSA stops passenger with dozens of firecrackers and knives in her carry-on
then there is apparently a LACK of common sense "safety education", which would obviously need to extend to firearms.
And the issue of "mental health" has always been thrown out there as a canard, but it has been near-impossible to get "red flag laws" enacted and/or enforced so that such individuals can even be "flagged" and dealt with. And there is always the danger of misusing the "mental health" excuse to target the "innocent" (perhaps stressed but not clinically mentally ill) and intentionally ignore the "obvious suspected ones with a history", because they don't fit "the description".

(68,722 posts)Its utter meaninglessness isnt deterring people from using it.
The thinking seems to be that countries with zero gun deaths in a year dont have people with mental illnesses.
They do. Its just that these countries dont make it absurdly easy to get a gun, whether the purchaser has mental health issues or not.

(6,530 posts)Ban all gun manufacturing and importation of firearms and anything involving explosives, like bullets.
Instant seizure of weapons found on civilians and homes. No search warrants, no nothing.
Restrict firearms to police on duty, military.
Oh wait, I'm thinking of other countries that did this years ago!
Carry on with those ineffective controls!
