'Don't you dare start reneging!' MAGA fans turn on Trump over Friday night appointment

An announcement by Donald Trump of a new appointee to his administration precipitated a wave of unhappiness from his supporters late Friday night with one MAGA fan accusing him of letting them down. On Truth Social, the president elect wrote, "I am pleased to announce that Peggy Schwinn will be our next United States Deputy Secretary of Education. Peggy has a strong record of delivering results for children and families. She previously served as the Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education and, at the Texas Education Agency, as the Deputy Commissioner of Standards and Engagement, Deputy Commissioner of Special Populations and Monitoring, and Chief Deputy Commissioner of Academics.
She was also the Assistant Secretary of Education of Delaware, and holds a masters degree from Johns Hopkins, as well as a Ph.D. from Claremont. A former teacher herself, Peggy became the founding principal of a charter school, because she believes in the power of School Choice, and is committed to delivering the American Dream to the next Generation by returning Education BACK TO THE STATES." He then added, "Congratulations to Peggy and her wonderful family!"
That led to a wave of complaints from supporters who reminded him he promised to shutter the Department of Education.
Self-described MAGA veteran Ken G, asked, "Why are we staffing this department up? You need to dismantle the 'Education' department..." Kirk Womack claims "Trump is our President" protested, "I thought we were going to get rid of the Federal Bloated Department of Education?" "You promised to shut down the Department of Education! Dont you dare start reneging!" accused Jon Crawford. Sammy, an opponent of the deep state, wrote, "WTF. Shut down the entire department."

(7,078 posts)Federal employees arent normally subject to no-notice termination. Can you elaborate?
Farmer-Rick
(11,594 posts)30 day notice, representation and appeals. They have a lot of other rights too depending on why they are being fired. Even reorganization requires they get a detailed explanation for why they are being let go.
If they don't get this, they need to file suit and appeals. Don't just roll over and let the fascist kick them out.
It normally takes an act of God to fire a Federal employee, but I suspect that the process will be expedited in a dictatorship.

(35,046 posts)Possibly, the positions are SES or Senior Executive Service slots which are political appointees and can be terminated by incoming administrations. Historically they havent been, but Trump is sure to take full advantage of it as it was a priority of Project 2025 that he claims only brought him coffee once.
Also, Trump is probably going to reinstate Schedule F, which had been hurriedly implemented in late 2020 (yes, after his election loss) and remained on the books until it was summarily discharged by President Biden in 2021.
What Schedule F is:
A Schedule F appointment was a job classification in the excepted service of the United States federal civil service that existed briefly at the end of the first Trump administration during 2020 and 2021. It would have contained policy-related positions, removing their civil service protections and making them easy to dismiss. It was never fully implemented, and no one was appointed to it before it was repealed at the beginning of the Biden administration. Trump has stated his intention to reinstate the Schedule F provisions at the beginning of his second term.
The purpose of the provision was to increase the president's control over the federal career civil service, which proponents stated would increase flexibility and accountability to elected officials. It was widely criticized as providing means to retaliate against federal officials for political reasons, impede the effective functioning of government, and provide risk to democracy. It was estimated that tens or hundreds of thousands of career employees could have been reclassified, increasing the number of political appointments by a factor of ten.
Since mid-2022, the 2024 Trump campaign's plan to reinstate the provision has attracted attention and commentary. In April 2024, the Biden administration adopted a regulation that would prevent most of the effects of a reinstatement of Schedule F, the repeal of which by a future administration would delay implementation by several months.

(7,078 posts)Is if the people who left are Schedule C appointees. They're political with no particular due process rights. All of our politicals left last week (I guess they're technically still in office until noon tomorrow) but they're gone. We knew well in advance that the Assistant Secretary and the Principal Deputy would be gone so there was lots of time to plan for their departures and to send them off with a nice farewell.
By the way, I don't know who will be the holdover in our agency. There's always at least one since there are some things that only a PAS (Presidentially Appointed, Senate Confirmed official) can sign or do. The closer I get to the top the more I'm glad I'm still just rank and file. I will tell you though, the thought of Schedule F coming back is most unappealing and If my position were placed under it I'd be gone immediately. Not playing that lottery...also, did I mention that I'm a looooooooooooooong career employee? I could be out of the workspace within about 90 minutes if it came to it.
Sometimes it's good to be old!
Hugin
(35,046 posts)Certainly not Schedule F. But, the hokey legal justification is probably going to be cutpaste.
The people behind this arent Trump. They think theyre doing what Trump wants, to please him. (The most dangerous scenario in a dictatorship.) Hes found a new shiny thing in writing himself a $25 B crypto check, he no doubt intends to cash from the US Treasury just in time to avoid a spanking for not appearing on the Forbes Richest List.

(1,601 posts)... until these blithering idiots finally figure out why their kids suddenly don't get all the federally subsidized benefits they were used to. And charter schools are free to reject kids with special needs.
Christ on a crutch, the staggering stupidity of these people is horrifying.
howardmappel
(92 posts)Actually, most charter schools can reject/eject anyone that they don't like -- so if your child was admitted but is dragging down the average "test" scores, kick that kid out, your average scores go up and you get to brag about how well your school is educating children. Add to pre-screening children, i.e., no kids from lower socio-economic, no special needs, no child you think might be difficult to control or expensive to teach, no library or librarians to cause trouble (other than, of course, the good "christian" parent to vet all the allowed books, which good "christian" parent has not library training and need not actually have a child in the system).
Charter schools, and vouchers, are IMO generally scams to divert money from public schools and funnel taxpayer money to hedge funds and grifters. Burn them all to the ground! (metaphorically speaking, of course).

Penny Schwinn checks all the boxes, charter school/school choice supporter, worked in TX and TN. She advocates for the things that drain money away from public schools.
I often think about the small public schools in the rural counties and areas of Pennsylvania, most of which went heavilty for Trump, and how much pride they take in their local schools, the sports teams, the band, the school plays, the achievements of their students. Most also recognize the PA charter school law makes the home district send money along with each student to whatever charter school they choose to attend. They recognize how much it costs the home district. If you'd ask them, they'd say they don't like that and the charter school laws need to be reformed or changed. But that's what they voted for and that's what they are getting in Ms Schwinn.

(145,572 posts)The campaign rhetoric insisted that 45 could unilaterally eliminate the Department (forget that Congress would need to do it).
So they want him to leave every position "vacant" in preparation for eliminating the Department.

(145,572 posts)They manage to aggregate news stories and will repackage them (although recently they have done more of their own "reporting" ). But at least they are willing to capture the sentiment of the always-entitled spoiled brat, perpetually-angry MAGats who will resort to violence if they don't get their way.

(145,572 posts)I have seen the "print" media doing the same.
They are all cowards and the sad part is that whenever they had a modicum of actual "reporting" about 45, they were then attacked on social media (and the foaming-at-the-mouth dog hoards were let loose to threaten and dox them), and their parent organizations were sued. The bullying worked to silence them.
And thanks! I know a lot of DUers "cut the cord" years ago and others have done so recently, so have been trying to get some news to people in this interim period after the election, when people said "enough is enough" with the pundits and gasbags.... at least to tide folks over for a bit.

(6,579 posts)Trump's past 'pronouncements' on policies are so vague, that they are wide open to interpretation, depending on who is listening.
How it will go down:
1. Trump sits back, other than a few more vague hints as to how his elite should react.
(After all, he has done the hard work, won the election!)
2. His chosen people, who you may remember were chosen on one feature, their loyalty to Trump and nothing else, will mess up so bad that the crumbling of many social structures people currently take for granted and not limited to Education, is guaranteed.
Give it a year or two, and people will realize that to make America great again, they need to rewind to the day before Trump decided he would meddle in politics.
There will need to be a Great Restoration some time in the future.
When?
In 4 years time, or soon after Trump's funeral. (Flags need not be flown at half-mast.)
