White House withdrawing Stefanik nomination to serve as US ambassador to UN

Source: The Hill

03/27/25 2:07 PM ET

The White House has informed the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that it is withdrawing Rep. Elise Stefanik’s (R-N.Y.) nomination to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, reflecting how critical her vote is in the House to passing President Trump’s agenda.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair James E. Risch (R-Idaho) received notice from the White House on Thursday afternoon that it was pulling Stefanik’s nomination, confirming a rumor that circulated earlier in the day in the media.

“I got a call from the White House,” Risch said after walking out of a Senate Republican luncheon. He said he was told “that they were pulling the nomination.” “I was informed that just minutes ago,” he said, adding he hadn’t yet had “a chance” to formulate a reaction.

House Republicans had expressed concern that if Stefanik was confirmed, it would have made it tougher to get Trump’s agenda through the lower chamber because Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) would have lost a vote in his conference and didn’t have a clear idea how long it would take New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to schedule a special election to fill the seat.

Hochul had floated having the legislature have the special election on general election day to "save money". They can't lose any more votes out of the House - even with 2 of their seats due to be re-filled next week (April 1st).

I've read that the possibility is vanishingly small, but, maybe?

special elections next week. I'm betting their internal polling is showing them in serious danger of losing both seats.

Current makeup is 218-213. In addition to the 2 Florida seats, there is a vacant Texas seat due to the death of Sylvester Turner earlier this month and a vacant Arizona seat due to the death of Raul Grijalva. You can bet Texas governor will delay calling that special election as long as possible (That is a 100% safe Democratic seat). The Arizona special election is set for September. Republicans are in real danger of losing their majority so they can no longer risk losing Stefanik's seat.

And if they lost Stefanik's spot, that would flip in our favor. Yeah, some chance they're concerned about the FL seats, but it could also be an abundance of caution situation because Stefanik being at the UN is roughly 1,000,000 times less important to the regime than is holding the House majority .

of those districts. James Carville had a conversation on his YouTube channel and mentioned the Florida districts. With the almost immediate push back concerning all the DOGE cuts as well as the democrats winning the state seat in a +15% red district in Pennsylvania, who knows what will happen. And one of those Florida districts is only about 15-20% red, the northern district around Daytona Beach. I have my fingers crossed, that would be quite an upset.

The elections for the 2 Florida seats is April 1 (next Tuesday). The special election for Raul Grijalva's vacant seat in Arizona is set for September. The special election for Sylvester Turner's vacant seat in Texas has not been scheduled yet.

Don't lose a seat in the house unless you have a really overwhelming majority and electoral momentum.

It will be perfectly easy to find another true believer for the gig, but even a minor chance of losing a house seat when it is this close would be sheer foolishness.

Stop underestimating the enemy! Just because Trump is a vainglorious and incompetent blowhard with the attention span of a gnat doesn't change the fact his handlers are focused, smart, ruthless, and playing for the long haul.

His so-called "smart handlers" pulled people out of the already short-handed GOP-controlled House, including dangling the carrot at Gaetz and having him RESIGN before he was even considered for confirmation, leaving his seat as a vacancy when his nomination was the first to be torpedoed.

And there was Waltz, another pulled from the House and now on the hot-seat and potentially a target for being the "fall guy" for Signalgate.

Pulling Stefanik (as a "reward for loyalty" ) would have been that proverbial straw... They were even looking at pulling others until someone told them "the math" (especially since Democrats actually had a net GAIN in the House in 2024, despite some of our seats being flipped since WE also flipped some of THEIR seats).

That's a very red district, but it's a military area (Eglin AFB.) Rumor has it a lot of vets & active duty folks are PISSED at the Fascist Felon for decimating veterans' services. We shall see.

But they (45's henchman) saw what happened during the election in November and ignored it.

When the dust settled, they had a net LOSS of a House seat.

So in their quest to "return favors", they hobbled an "early win" for their "legislative agenda"... which seems to have triggered the dictator's massive violation of numerous laws in an attempt to wrest control of all 3 Branches, and slash and burn through the government like a Veruca Salt on steroids.
