The race for UN ambassador is on again, but some potential choices already saying no

The White House is eager to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik as its nominee for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and at least two ex-Trump administration officials with diplomatic experience are in the mix. Some prominent potential candidates, meanwhile, are taking a pass.

Top contenders at the moment — according to a Republican involved in the discussions — include David Friedman, Trump’s first-term ambassador to Israel, and Ellie Cohanim, who served as deputy special envoy focused on fighting antisemitism during Trump’s first term. (Both Cohanim and Friedman declined to comment.)

One outside possibility is GOP Sen. Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, who was Trump’s first-term ambassador to Japan. The slim margins Republicans have in Congress may, however, affect his chances, especially because not all Republican senators can be counted on to vote with the president. Trump, after all, pulled Stefanik’s nomination because of growing GOP concerns about keeping the House majority. She’ll keep representing a New York district and will return to a position in House leadership. Hagerty’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Richard Grenell, a special envoy for President Donald Trump with diplomatic and U.N. experience, told Newsmax Thursday night that he’s a “hard no” on the U.N. ambassador role. Another name that has been floated is Morgan Ortagus, a former State Department spokesperson who now works on Middle East issues for Trump. But a person familiar with her situation said she’s also not interested. A White House spokesperson declined to comment.

Stuck with explaining all the pain and death we now inflict on the world after abruptly ending USAID with zero notice, planning, or care at all for the consequences. Imagine that. Gee, Trumpie, you had a committed liar in Stefanik--you know the sociopathic Congresswoman who would say anything you wanted her to do--having been well practiced from her 180-degree turn in her politics while in Congress. I'm sure you will eventually find someone like your committed, record-breaking, ignorant Senator Tuberville. He'd surely both do your bidding and bring the final embarrassing shame on this country before the world.
