Private groups work to identify and report student protesters for possible deportation

Source: AP

When a protester was caught on video in January at a New York rally against Israel, only her eyes were visible between a mask and headscarf. But days later, photos of her entire face, along with her name and employer, were circulated online.

“Months of them hiding their faces went down the drain!” a fledgling technology company boasted in a social media post, claiming its facial-recognition tool had identified the woman despite the coverings.

She was anything but a lone target. The same software was also used to review images taken during months of pro-Palestinian marches at U.S. colleges. A right-wing Jewish group said some people identified with the tool were on a list of names it submitted to President Donald Trump’s administration, urging that they be deported in accordance with his call for the expulsion of foreign students who participated in “pro-jihadist” protests.

Other pro-Israel groups have enlisted help from supporters on campuses, urging them to report foreign students who participated in protests against the war in Gaza to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

Talk about a time of social and political upheaval. It even feels as if the ground under my feet is becoming unstable. “Turning, turning in the widening gyre…”. I have to tell you all I don’t like it one bit!

There were a lot of "amateurs" tracking down J6 rioters, and the FBI used facial recognition to ID a lot of them, mostly for federal misdemeanors. (There are a lot of federal misdemeanors, to be honest.)

But that was for federal charges. These are being reported for violating the terms of their visas (haven't seen much discussion about violating terms of green cards, even if there are terms that can be violated in that way). It'll be up to judges to decide if the language in the statutes or regulations is actually applicable.

If you're a citizen--naturalized or by birth--then I don't see that speech itself is something chargeable unless it's a direct call for violence. I don't even think that the pro-Gazan protestors' speech crossed that line with the occasional "oven" reference or desire for more "floods". Then again, I'm not a judge or legal expert.

While I vehemently oppose those pro-Palestinisn protestors who want the destruction of Israel (the "river to the sea" crap)- they have the right to demonstrate as long as they're not harassing Jewish students. If their doing that, they need to be fined, or something!

I also oppose how Netanyahoo has run his war. I sure hope the remaining Palestinians will be able to rebuild without 🤬 Jared & Co arriving to push them out.
