HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s biggest pro-democracy party voted Sunday to dissolve after more than 30 years of activism, marking the end of an era of the Chinese semiautonomous city ‘s once-diverse political landscape.

Democratic Party chairperson Lo Kin-hei said the political environment was “one important point” among the factors they considered, and about 97% of members’ ballots were in support of its liquidation. He said it is the best way forward for its members.

“Yet as the times have shifted, we now, with deep regret, must bring this chapter to a close,” he said.

Party veterans had earlier told The Associated Press that some members were warned of consequences if the party didn’t shut down. Its demise reflects the dwindling freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to China’s rule in 1997.

The dissolution of the Democratic Party in Hong Kong.

This is the exact same goal Trump, Project 2025, and the Republicans have for America. Promise that nothing will change, Democracy will be respected, and independence will not be eliminated. Then slowly grind down all forms of freedom until only an authoritarian dictatorship remains.

Indirectly, as democracy is lost here and we show up in fewer and fewer places to defend democracy... as well as actually bomb the shit out of sovereign countries, we're going to see more of these fledgling and struggling democracies give up the ghost. As long as trump seems able to rule the world, there's no heart for the struggle any longer. More comfy just to take the easy way and go along to get along, and hope for the least harm.

THIS is what trump has done. I lay ALL this at his and his maladministration's feet, as well as P2024 Heritage Foundation policies. Shame on them!!!
