Lawmakers Issue Kristi Noem Impeachment Threat at ICE HQ--'Not Backing Down'

Dozens of members of Congress rallied outside Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) headquarters on Tuesday to issue a warning directed at Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, saying she must resign, be fired or face impeachment in the House.
"If Kristi Noem does not resign, and the president does not fire her, Democrats are ready and willing to impeach her," Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, said at the demonstration in Washington. DHS previously told Newsweek that the Democratic-led effort is "silly," and said that Noem and ICE are "enforcing the rule of law passed by Congress."
Why It Matters
Noem has been under increasing pressure, with even a couple Republican senators publicly backing her removal, after two U.S. citizens37-year-olds Renee Good and Alex Prettiwere shot and killed by federal agents in Minnesota last month. Democrats' push to impeach her has ramped up significantly, with more than 180 lawmakers co-sponsoring the resolution. However, as Republicans control the House with a slim majority, the effort would need support from a few GOP members along with all Democrats to move forward.
What To Know
The rally was a combined effort organized by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers participated, with many posting video messages from outside ICE Headquarters.

(166,993 posts)We do NOT Chair any Committees.
We do NOT have subpoena power.
We do NOT control the legislative calendar or schedule votes.
All our members can do is what they are doing now (protesting), along with holding "shadow hearings", one of which happened yesterday, to bring what is going on to the attention of the country on media that we DO NOT OWN and REFUSE TO BUY.

(2,616 posts)I understand how Congress (dys)functions.
The text you quoted implies threats to impeach. If they can't and all they can do is wring their hands in protest, then they ought not threaten, and if they can because they know they have the support of a few Republicans, will then Just. Do. It.
Not trying to argue, I appreciate all your posts.

(166,993 posts)Right now, they have versions of Impeachment Articles drafted.
They can introduce one as a "privileged motion" forcing Mikie to act on it within (I think) 3 days. Then when it comes time for a vote, some douchebag GOPer will file a "motion to table" and their zombies (and probably some of our own zombies) will vote to kill it.
But by doing these "public actions", it fulfills another DU "demand" that we "pound the podium and stomp our feet" so that we get some kind of news coverage about the issue (and that puts pressure on those swing state GOPers to make a decision).
(P.S. sorry for yelling - we are all living through some stressful times, some of it due to knowing whole swaths of people thought they "knew better" when they refused to support Harris/Walz for the election, and now we are all suffering)
